I guess everyone has heard it all before but I suggested to a friend to start a local newsletter to earn a bit of pocket money.

Just thinking of ways to perhaps make it a little different for him and thought about an A6 newspaper. Would that cost a lot to print? Would it be worth printing that small?
I thought it could be thrown into a handbag / back pocket?

Any ideas to stand out?

(NB: I dont think its the best way to earn but do think its an easy way to make a few quid)

Just on a small scale.

Its been a while since I did it but it worked for me (was hard though)

Gathered some local news.
Made a mock up of the newsletter.
Spoke to every shopkeeper and asked if they had offers / news and sold them space at a good rate (cant remember now)
Also did a handy numbers in the back at a cheaper price.
Got it printed at a local printers.
Delivered it to every house in the town. (that was the boring bit)

I did it twice however with a full time job aswell I couldnt keep it up / moved on to other things.

Your right you will never make good money but its an extra bit of pocket money for someone young and looking for another income???

Bit of a spin off of your idea, why dont you team up with the local resident association and produce a website/newsletter or eletter for them. And then sell advertising space for the local businesses. that way you can target your audience but you may have to give some of your profits to the residence association.

Sounds like a very hard way to make money.

Our local newsletter is given away free and people still dont bother reading it much.

With respect to the o/p, this is like another one of those one chance in a million of it being successful that you see...

I want to run my own pub, by buying a failing one and making it successful. Anyone any ideas?

I want to become a successful multimillionare ebay entrepreneur, but i've never used ebay before.

Or my favourite - I used to be a security guard and my security licence says i'm qualified to run my own security company. How do i do it?

Its the lack of comprehension of the money required, effort, risk, and minimal chance of success that bemuses me.

No one would buy it, so you would have to rely on selling advertising space. Then there is putting the mag together, creating the ads, creating the content and then organising the printing and distribution.
A lot of work for very little if any return. It would also take time to convince advertisers that the publication was worth adverting in, so you would have to run the first few issues at a lost.

Local newsletters can make a bit of money but never more than “something for a retired couple to do”.

I’m sort of involved in our local one on a voluntary basis and I can assure you it’s exceptionally hard work.

Local newspapers make an average gross margin of around 8% and that’s with a massive support network.

There is a government directive being rolled out at the moment that requires all Parish / Town councils to communicate with each household at least four times a year so you will end up doing what they have to do anyway.
