I was looking to join mainly for the networking, one contract more than pays for the membership. Seems to be a decent amount of events in the local area, are they actually worth going to?

I'd also been told about the BNI which seem similar, anyone got good things to say about them?

never had the need to attend BNI but I know several of our clients that have given up going to them. I guess it depends on what you do & how easily you network with others?

Depends on what line of business you are in. Works for some, doesn't for others, and a large part of it is the group you join. If I recall it was expensive as well.

The BNI chappy near me also was the FSB bloke. He came out to see me, gave me the pitch. I said let me think about it and would get back to him. He threw the toys out of the pram saying "I came here today to sign you up". Threw him out of the offfice and put me right off them

All for £120. They're non-profit too. Worth it?
£120 and non-profit you say?

From the other posts on here, if you have employees and plan to have legal probelms, sign up. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Kudos - as with everything there are always good & bad examples, how easy life would be if this were any different! Don't let 1 bad experience put you off (or let it put anybody else off), there are thousands of members who HAVEN'T had bad experiences & who DO see the advantages of being a member.

is providing a comprehensive Contract of Employment to a new employee covered by your above comment? What about assistance if your landlord is putting pressure on you about something?

and what about the savings many members see from card processing, banking & insurance to name just a few? And the members who have covered the cost of their subscription by getting 1 new contract at a FSB event?

As they say, 'your mileage may vary'. I work from home and have no employees.

I don't take credit cards (I did, but no longer required), I have free banking, insurance is £75 a year, and much of my past work came from visiting buiness exhibitions - which cost nothing. But then, my target clients were blue chip types, and they are too busy being blue chip to be in the FSB anyway!

I happily accept that whilst the FSB has little or nothing to offer me (other than tedious articles in 'business' magazines showing people shaking hands whilst being awarded a perspex trophy), it may be great for some smile

The guy came round last week and presented a very credible presentation, what sold it for me was the help should the tax man ever want to look at my books. Plus all the templates and documents that they said they have on the site that I can use, they could come in useful, especially T&C for the website and that.

I have been given my temp membership number, am still waiting for my proper one, but at the moment the temp one won't let me log into the website, how long does it take for the permanent one to come through?

I think it's much like the Institute of Directors. Look through the benefits of being a member objectively and if there's a few which apply to you they can definitely be worth it. I've found both to be fairly useful, though I've only recently joined the IoD. If there's a few discounts you're likely to make use of it'll pay for itself I found.

Just had these people in, decided to do some research and instantly thought of PH.
Any one got any current views, business banking looks interesting but are the Co-Op any good. Has anyone ever used their HR or legal?
Do you just renew every year and get no benefit or are they cost effective.

Co-op are as good/bad as any other bank, just much cheaper via FSB, although don't put more than £85,000 in there wink

I've used the employment helpline a couple of times, they seem to have their feet on the ground, unlike Croners who we used to use.

I used to pay my accountant for HMRC revenue investigation insurance but the FSB cover that too.

I arranged to meet with one of there local contacts at a Costa Coffee as I was working at a client nearby and they never turned up. No-one answered the email I sent where both the person who arranged the meeting and the actual contact who I was meant to meet were copied in.
So as the benefits to me were marginal anyway I decided to have nothing more to do with them - in the unlikely event they actually contact me again.
