6Gbit/sec Full Duplex smile that test was maybe 2% of my capacity!
If you don't mind, what sort of coin gets you a connection like that?
It's easy if you live in Canary Wharf, the hub of the UK's Internet.
I'd say for mid £xxx you can have a connection like this to your home quite easily here. ([i] but it helps if you're within WiFi distance of the Datacentre![/i[)

Cable tends to be router profile capped, so you'll probably find, if you can get a useful chap(ess) at virgin, you can treble that number with a simple flash and reboot.
The benefits of a proprietary network system bourne out of many bankrupt forefather companies smile

That's a bit better.

We have fibre installed in the flat too but I have never got it connected as this is fast enough...

The only downside to having good Internet speeds. Is when you go elsewhere, hotels, friends homes, etc, their Internet seems really slow and annoying! hehe

edit bloody shabby even if the link between here and KL is probably wet string in places ....

Tell me about it! I think nothing of downloading files, updates and patches at home on my 50Mb connection. Go to a customers premises, decide on an update and it can take hours. It is actually quicker to take the PC home, download update, then take it back!!!

Pretty horrific upload speed. About to switch to Virgin 50mb I think.

Hmm

Theoretical max download speed of 65.5 Mb/s

Movies in under 20 seconds? I'll have some of that!

Work, symmetrical ethernet connection. I remember when this seemed ridiculously quick.

Quick question...

My ping is, say, 0.85ms. Now, I understand that to be 0.00085 seconds? Taking the speed of light as 3x10^8m/s that means the distance to exchange is 300,000,000 x 0.00085 = 255km.

My exchange is 5km away. What am I doing wrong? bangheadshootgrumpy
It's the distance to the server in question. and back again.
Not all bytes travel at the same speed (just like cars on the motorway), so when your "32 byte ping train" gets to a hub or a switch the front byte has to wait for the back byte to catch up, hence the delay beyond what you'd expect from the maths.
And then there's delays in ethire processing or inspecting the data before its passed on..
And then there's the fact that your telephone cable covers a few miles extra than the straight line route...
And then...
So is it likely that if I moan enough at BT they may be able to do something about it?

I've looked into sat broadband and would happily pay the £40-50/month for 10mb download/6mb upload if the ping rates were good enough for XBL.

Is it likely (or even physically possible) that sat broadband will ever be able to provide ping rates low enough?

No, because you're still limited by a land connection for upstream.

ETA - ignore that. Seems satellite BB has moved on a bit since I looked into it a while back (well, about 12 years back actually biggrin)
