On a connection which is supposed to be "up to 8mb" and I have seen at between 4-6mb, this seems to be the norm recently.

Which is why my Sky router is awaiting activation in the hope of improvement

So rubbish then. How far is the satellite? Any signal has to travel 4 times that distance before even bothering with any ground hardwiring. It's always going to be an awful ping rate.

Apparently the French are putting some satellites up in 2015 in low earth orbit which will offer latency of less than 10ms...

So is it likely that if I moan enough at BT they may be able to do something about it?

I've looked into sat broadband and would happily pay the £40-50/month for 10mb download/6mb upload if the ping rates were good enough for XBL.

Is it likely (or even physically possible) that sat broadband will ever be able to provide ping rates low enough?
I live in the sticks in Derbyshire and was getting 1.5mb on a crap adsl. I've now gone to W3Z which is fairly local but I get wireless broadband now at 10mb down and 1mb up ping to London is 12ms....

brilliant can't recommend them enough, If you happen to live in the coverage area that is.

You'll be on Virgin Media ADSL?
If so its because your connection is a Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The Asymmetric bit being the key here, your upload is never going to be the same as your download.
Standard upload speeds are between 0.1-1mb max really. Depending on how much you pay for your connection (there's normally a higher tier of "Pro" service that has an improved upload)
