Is it just an iMac issue?
Not just iMac, it is a very common problem with lion, there are a few workarounds like leaving a terminal open or changing DNS to google!

I am not keen to do a workaround as it is a software issue which should be fixed with an update, I have reset PRAM and SMC as suggested.

It is a problem could do without as I have apple tv's which rely on the iMac.

I am sure it will get fixed.

Here's a tip for anyone suffering from performance degradation after upgrading from OS X 10.6 to OS X 10.7.

Have a look in ~/Library/LaunchAgents and clear out any crap you don't need.

I had stuff dating from 2007 in mine!

Apple TV will stream from iPad to your TV.

Well, it makes sense. So many of the apps can use it through the Tv, you can stream from a server in any format using air video, send your music, photos, etc, as well as browsing YouTube from your iPad, and see the vids on the TV. If you have an idevices, it really is a goer for 99quid or whatever it is.

Thanks god for this thread, as I wouldn't have known where to start looking for an answer!
I'm OKAY at Apple stuff, but not sure about how to go about this:

Issue... Dad has just got himself an iPhone (which of course means I'm his first port of call when he's stuck with a difficult task such as 'how do I turn it off') and we already have an issue regarding his Apple ID... or lack of.

His first apple gadget was an iPod. For this, we downloaded iTunes onto his PC laptop.
He then was given an iPad as a Christmas present by my sister. While trying to convince him over Christmas dinner that the iPad is in fact the next best thing after sliced bread, my sister was posed with the 'Enter Apple ID' question when downloading some apps for him to play around with. To keep it quick she entered her ID, and ever since he's been running the iPad with her ID (and everything gets billed to her). I don't think the iPad has ever been sync'd with his computer. In fact I think it may have been sync'd with my sisters at some point to upload some movies for him.

Now that he has an iPhone, he wants to clear up the mess created and have his own Apple ID, linked to his own debit card, linked to his laptop, linked to his music, contacts, videos etc.. which is fair enough.

But where the F do I start? I don't want to accidentally delete any of his stuff. How do you change Apple ID's? Can you start fresh ones and assign gadgets to them?

Should this make a difference, he might be replacing the PC with a Mac soon as well (God forbid), so even more importance for everything to be spot on.

Any advice more than welcome. Please let's sort this before he works out how to facetime (for a really long time) blabla

Thank you!!!

Just setup a new iTunes accoint, with all his details, and plug in the devices. It will wipe the 'old' account, and replace with the new stuff. He can then do his own stuff on it as he sees fit.

One thing he can do is to authorize each others accounts, that way they can share media, (which includes apps, I think, I could be wrong).

Don't worry about getting a mac. You can copy the stuff directly using the mac migrant program. Job jobbed.

excellent stuff! You've answered the worry I had, which was what will happen when I plug in the old devices to a newly made account... will all their media / downloads disappear, or will they get transferred!

And how does one go about starting a new account.. is this done through iTunes?

Thanks ever so much for the help pal!

Well, you can only run one 'account' on the device, so if you plug into your new account it WILL DELETE the contents of the iPod, NOT transfer it.

If je wants the media, you can use share pod to copy it to the comp, then add it to your dad's new account.

Oh, to get a new account, just do it in iTunes, (top right in itunes store)

I've finally installed my Optibay in my Macbook Pro (A1226) and would like to know how I install software on my 2nd hard drive? Do I need to make an applications folder on the 2nd drive?

@AOK - Settings > Store > click on ID logged in > Sign out > Sign in > create new ID

Do that on the iPad, then once new ID sorted, sign in on iPod and iTunes.
iTunes' Preferences, under Devices, turn off auto sync.
Connect iPad, and hopefully you'll be able to transfer the apps off it, using Transfer purchases.
Movies & music may not be transferable, so your sister would need to copy them into his laptop for his iTunes to access and sync with.

You can do, if only to make things neater, otherwise just move apps to it, or select it as the destination when running the Installer for the particular app.

Thanks, I'll setup a new folder and find something to install as a test

Apps for OS X (*NIX in general) are self contained, so there's no need to worry about where they reside.
Desktop, external drive, Utilities folder within Applications folder, etc, are all locations where you could install or move installed ones to.
Any pre-installed ones, with a shortcut on the Dock, will need to be launched first, then its icon right clicked, and Keep in Dock selected. The old symbolic link just needs to be dragged off the dock to remove, and the new one can be repositioned in the dock to wherever you fancy.

Understood. I've just been trying with a few programmes that I don't use all that often and it seems to work.

If they have been bought with another iTunes account, will apps be transferable?

Free ones should, and paid ones might need a call to Apple Support to explain the purchase methodology at the time.
It's always worth a try rather than assume the worst.

Authorizing the account to use the daughters stuff should work, I think, for apps.
