Thanks for all the replies. One more question - how easy would it be to uninstall iLife or specific packages within it? And how would one do so? Still getting to grips with this whole OSX platform...

Uninstalling is as simple as dragging the Application to the Trash, restarting, then emptying it.
Unless you're short of storage, just ignore it since you don't use it.

I use Aperture, it is far more useable (to me at least) than iPhoto. Lets me put all my physical photo files onto an external drive, which I could never work out how to do with iPhoto.

iPhoto just sits unused.

No idea if it still applies...

That is still on one drive though isn't it?

Currently I am up at three 1TB drives for my photos.

Well, you just asked for an external source for pics. Now it is 3 different sources. Just trying to help. iPhoto is clearly just a basic home photo thing, not for folks with 3TB of photographs.

OK gents, new problem here. Relative newbie to Macs (4 months) and seem to have an issue I'm stuck with. Google not helping much, other than finding others have the same issue.

Mac Mini, connected by FireWire 800 to external 2GB Seagate drive - which holds iTunes library (music and movies) and Time Machine backup. Has worked well for months, streaming to Apple TV in the lounge. Drive formatted as HFS.

Today, for no apparent reason it cannot see the drive. Switching the drive off, moving to USB connection, restarting the Mac (or switching off) has done nothing. Would not see the drive under the Apple logo - About this Mac - Storage, either. irked

Happened to have borrowed the office MacBook, and it will see it.

WTF? Help!

Not aware of FireWire tripping out - try resetting the PRAM.
Hold down Command (⌘) Alt (Option) P and R keys at power on. Upon the third chime, release and let the Mac boot into OS X.
Alternatively, relaunch Finder if you're connected and powered on, and see if that works.

Slower, but that's not the end of the world. Can't remember why I moved to 11, but I had fairly decent reasons at the time. Don't regret it in the slightest.

Did a "Repair Disk" via the office MacBook... and our Mac now sees it.

Odd. What I don't understand is why it stopped seeing it.

Finding the switch from PC to Mac very trying.

Repair Disk, if anything was red and not all green, suggests there was an issue with the one of the attributes - commonly can happen to slightly bork a drive if they've been turned off mid-writing or unplugged without ejecting first.
What other aspects of Mac or OS X are you finding "trying" rather than just different from what you're used to?

We have two Macs. Both purchased from the Apple store.

I have just noticed that we have two different keyboards! WTF?!? Which is the correct one?

Bottom one is a US layout. Were they bought at the same time? How long ago?

You can probably set them both to produce the same results regardless of what's printed on the keys.

I'm sure you can, but I've paid for a premium product. I expect it to be right.

Not sure whether anyone can help me on this one.

Purchased iphone 4s back in nov 11, got sorted on dell 6400 no problem.

About 3 months ago or so decided to restore my laptop back to facotry settings ( gettting on 6/7 years old and was running out of space )

Got itunes onto laptop with music from itunes downloaded back onto it, got phone linked into itunes.
For some reason though it never seems to remember my login so every now and again im having to put in my password about 3 times for different things.

My actual issue though is that i can now no longer get music from my itunes library onto my iphone :/ logged out and in several times but still no good!

Anyone got any recommendations? Itunes and phone are as far as updated as possible.
