A speaker question for the experts.
I bought a Zeppelin Air and have set it up for AirTunes which works very well.
I can't find a way of selecting the Zeppelin as computer speakers.
I have searched google and haven't found anything, I know if I had wired speaker to the iMac they would work, is there no option for wifi speakers?
Thanks
Ben

From what I have read this is not really possible. To use the speakers over wifi, you need to use AirTunes and to use AirTunes from a Mac you need to use iTunes (I think). There is no other way currently for OSX to use wifi speakers without iTunes (which doesn't provide a way of just passing general sounds through to AirTunes).I bought a Zeppelin Air and have set it up for AirTunes which works very well.

The idea really is to "send" the music from iTunes to AirTunes (which is then picked up by the Zeppelin). They would need to create a plugin in OSX to do this which I don't think they have done yet. Theoretically it should be possible but I don't think it has been done yet.

Hmm just stumbled across this app that runs on your Mac: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/
It claims to allow any sound created on your Mac to be sent out on the AirPlay waves to your Zeppelin Air.
Does that help?

But why do you even want to do what you're asking?
The Zep Air is predominantly for music (and movies in iTunes), not the alerts OS X makes when you set an iCal reminder or try to do something not permitted.
The in-built speakers are more than up for the task, and YT video watching too.
If you've recently come from a Windows PC way of life, then I suppose that explains your thought process......it's wrong!

Ha ha, i love the zeppelin and use it only for music ( seldom seen kid playing as i type ).The Zep Air is predominantly for music (and movies in iTunes), not the alerts OS X makes when you set an iCal reminder or try to do something not permitted.

i told my wife who was on mtv music looking at videos that she could be playing it through the zeppelin, turns out i may be wrong.
In all honesty it doesn't bother me but i was shocked you can't.

i asked this in the general computer section and got some rather enigmatic (to me) replies about default gateways which i'm sure are correct but generic to routers and not specific to airport extremes
thread here
the problem is this. my broadband comes in through my net gear dg845 wireless router/modem. it then goes to my airport extreme and then distributed.
the net gear has the radio switched off so only the AE is broadcasting my wifi. there are some macs and NASs connected via ethernet to a switch and then the AE.
i would like the AE to be the DHCP server. however, when i switch DHCP off on the net gear and on on the AE my network is truly buggerred. if i revert and switch it back on on the net gear and use the AE in bridge mode my network is restored.
does anyone know how to enable the AE to be the DHCP server and the net gear to be a 'dumb' modem only?
thanks for your help, i hope i've explained it properly.

I'm not particularly keen on the net gear setup screen an the way it assigns ip addresses. I can't get it to assign static addresses properly. I have a nas and a macmini that are always on. It's not so much of a problem with the macmini as I can find it with bonjour, but sometimes after a reboot the nas has a changed ip address which is annoying.

Is there an app/plug in so I can download videos from a webpage?
I used to have one on my Firefox on my Windows Laptop.. Could just click and download whatever video was on the screen.
Yup... There are loads for Firefox on OSX as well. Easy downloader, or whatever it is called is the one I use. There is also a plugin for safari that lets you stream stuff on your screen to an appleTV if you need to.I used to have one on my Firefox on my Windows Laptop.. Can you not just set the manual ip at the device?
I have done this with my iMac and it has solved my wifi issues.
In the netgear router does it have the option ' always use this ip address'
Then at device set up manual ip and put the same in.
Ben
The netgear has the ability to reserve ip addresses but this doesn't appear to always work, especially with wifi devicesI have done this with my iMac and it has solved my wifi issues.

Take a screenshot of each of the settings panels on the Netgear and the Apple one, I'll see if I can help.
If you don't already have a host (or one of the crappier ones) then I'd recommend picturepush.com
Make sure the folder is set to Public so we can see them.

Yep, but could've done with a bit more on the 845 to see other options.hope this means something to you
Is the Apple unit connected wirelessly or tethered with an RJ45 Cat 5 into the Netgear?
From the above, I'd disable the DHCP on the 845, hook up the Apple on one of the ports (WAN) of the Netgear, then set the Apple unit to distribute static IP addresses from .3-.8 - it'll be .2
You'd then marry the MAC of each device to an IP address.
DNS can be filled in with the same addresses in the 845's there - those are Virgin's, aren't they?
Might be a case of having you email me more of the gear's setting panels so I can get a full feel on what you've to work with.
Okay, you can remove those now.
