My concern is duff hardware. If that's the case I want to sort it before the warranty expires! Sounds like a Kernel panic, or something of that ilk. Run diagnostics, and see if that flags anything up.

Yeah that's what mines done.
Diagnostic probably won't show up anything and if you take it to the Genius Bar they'll try and scare you into buying a new one.
Mines working okay-ish at the minute but if you go on Youtube or doing anything other than web browsing the it freezes, the screen flickers and you basically have to shut it off immediately before that screen comes up and it does a kernel panic.

I did get it looked at. He couldn't find anything in diagnostics so suggested it was the logic board that was f ked and £600 to fix. Then suggested I should just replace it with a new MacBook given the age of the machine. I don't have £600 so can't fix it.

(disclaimer: I haven't browsed the links in the post above this one, so if I'm just repeating a subset of what's there, apologies) My experience of kernel panics is that they are caused, in very roughly decreasing order of probability, by: - Bad memory
- Overheating due to a clogged ventilation system, or a failing/failed fan
- A badly reassembled system causing a marginal connection somewhere
- A power problem such as a PSU on the cusp of failure
- A failing system board
- A faulty CPU

And suddenly, it lives! Previously had to run the hardware test on startup to prevent a kernel panic (which is weird enough in itself). But now it'll just start normally and run normally, even Youtube and other flash videos that would previously cause it to s t itself are fine. What the hell?

A quick iCloud question please...
A friend of mine currently uses an exchange mailbox for synching calendars etc with his iPhone but is aware that it's a strange way of doign things for a small biz and would like to know if my suggested iCloud way would work.
Both he & his wife have iPhones. There's an Office Pc and an iPad.
Is it simply a matetr of setting them all to use the same Apple ID in iCloud and they'll all sync contacts & calendar?

If you download geektool you can customize your display with whatever you want, however you want. A bit like this, (but with euro exchange rate, etc)

Ladies and gents of the Mac world, I have an issue with Time Machine I've got a setup similar to this one where I have a sparse bundle setup on a Windows Home Server machine. I thought I set up the bundle to be limited to 300gb (it's a 2tb RAID), however, it's now over 450gb and I can't control the bloody thing. Does anybody have any idea how I can control Time Machine? It says it will delete backups when the disk is full!

As far as I know there is no configuration to stop this from happening. The best way people have found around this is to set up a separate partition just for Time Machine. HTH M

HTH M Correct in all aspects. Time Machine is designed to use a single volume. I have my TM backups on a separate external disk.
