It's a wireless router, NOT a modem.

So you have to connect it to an internet connection. Then it will share that connection wirelessly.

People on older versions of BT Infinity or Virgin Cable will know what I mean - you have a modem that connects up the internet, then you have to put it into a wireless router to share it on wi-fi.

Do you know whether enabling the PPPoE option on my existing router will effectively turn it into a modem? I want to use the Time Capsule as a router but whilst my old router is still wireless there appear to be conflicts.

There shouldn't be conflicts, with my set up I have three options available to me, BTHub4, time capsule and time capsule guest. I can chop and change at will with no problems. I just click on the one I want to use.

If you can plug a phone line into it (usually an RJ11 jack, like an RJ45 network port but smaller) then it's a modem of some sort or other.
The PPPoE/PPPoA depends entirely on your ISP and what they deliver to you. As a home subscriber it's very likely to be PPPoE. Ask your ISP for the settings they recommend.

After searching the German T Mobile help forums I think I found the answer. It looks entirely possible, but I'm not going to start messing with my router settings at midnight (I once started changing a radiator at 9:00pm on a Sunday evening and learnt a valuable lesson from that). Thanks all.

Hi all

I've recently aquired a mac mini and am looking for a decent monitor that can cope with its max rez without spending a fortune. Any recommendations for largeish monitors with suitable resolution that don't cost a fortune? cheers
I use two BenQs - 27", 1080p, about a hundred quid. Very happy with them.

Depends what you're after though.
my understanding is that a mac mini can push out higher than 1080 with the right monitor but there dont seem to be many around that do better than 1080, unless you want to fork out 800 quid for an apple one

Gents,

Is there a way of locking a magic mouse to a particular machine?

I have this random issue where the mouse on my iMac will just drop its connection and then pair itself with my sleeping macbook?

Its a royal PITA - as I usually assume the batteries need swapping etc. Only to find that its paired with the laptop for no reason (which also already has a mouse paired with it as well!)

The only way I can seemingly get the mouse to reconnect with the iMac is to move the macbook into a different room so the bluetooth is broken - otherwise it refuses to reconnect to my iMac, and even if I disconnect it from my macbook it instantly reconnects?

Turn off your 'Book's Bluetooth – that'll stop it trying to connect with the mouse, even though I'd have thought once paired with the Mac, it would need unpairing first before the laptop can attempt to commandeer it.

Close to ordering a 5k iMac. Intend to spec the i7 and 295 GPU for some future proofing. Was going to spec 16GB memory too for same reasons but I read that buyers are stupid to do this as apparently you can upgrade it yourself for peanuts?

This will be my first ever Apple product spin. I am primarily buying for the screen and font clarity after seeing it in person in an Apple shop. I'm not easily impressed these days but I can honestly say I was amazed at just how fantastic the screen and fonts are. Proper sharp crystal clear jet black fonts, not the grey ghosty mess of fonts you get with Windows which have been pissing me off for the past 7 months since I bought a W7 (and later W8.1) system. I was looking at building a Hackintosh but when I discovered that the cheapest 5k screen on its own is over £1200, the iMac is not so vastly overpriced for the spec as it first appears, so what the hell, time to treat myself! spin

I bought the 21.5" (non retina) and at the time it is the only model that was an ass to update memory (take it apart or have from new). The 27 inch had a flap that was user accessible. The blurb on the Apple site says this is still so for the 5k one.

Suppose you configure your on the apple store (before paying) but check the price of memory from somewhere else and see what the difference is when messing with the memory options on the store.

So, from the apple configuration on the apple store when selecting a retina iMac. £160 for 16GB and £480 for 32GB (8GB as standard option). Looks like four slots.

Please do not take my word for it though, check it out as I may have cocked it up. There is a vid on youtube.

Yes, easy to upgrade the RAM yourself, it doesn't invalidate the warranty, there's a panel on the back that clips off to reveal the DIMM slots.

this video illustrates the procedure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F9YYhgS6pQ

Go for it. It really is superb. Be aware of lead time, took around three weeks from order to delivery. Enjoy!

Thanks chaps. I think I'll stick with the standard 8GB initially as it should be plenty for my uses plus some light gaming. I can always upgrade it later and of course it nicely lowers the initial purchase cost too.

3 WEEKS?! yikes Says on the configurator delivery in 2-4 days for a non-standard spec. scratchchin

Yup here's the top of my acknowledgement. In fact it arrived on Christmas Eve. One thing I discovered on my Apple buying adventure is that unless an outlet happens the have the exact spec you want ( and most only carry poverty spec) you have to order from Apple.

Congrats, I just got my 5k iMac last week and am absolutely smitten with it, had no idea a display could be so sharp.

It's not unusual for their shipping times to be conservative from my experience, often had things delivered a couple of days earlier than expected. Of course now I've said that it'll turn up in March hehe

Excellent.

Spec pretty much the same as mine though I went for a bigger fusion drive; my lead time was probably due to it being just before Christmas.

I didn't bother with a mouse, hate them, instead went for wireless board and track pad which is particularly good. Originally ordered a superdrive but sent it back after deciding I wanted BluRay (see below). Good bit of kit but you need to get software too.

Also went for a time capsule which is superb. Used to use a HP MediaServer which was ok but bit temperamental. By comparison Time Capsule is solid and simple. No idea what the sound is like as I've been running Soundsticks II since day one.

Lastly, you have two weeks from delivery to return anything you don't want. They send a courier round to pick up FOC.

Have fun smile

The external track pad is as good as the laptop touchpads, i.e. fantastic.

I hate track pads and yes I've used the one on my mate's Apple laptop too (Mac Book something) and even after explaining and showing me what the various gestures do I still didn't like it. I'm used to using a mouse and I like to stick with stuff I'm familiar with. yes

I hated it for the first few days, took me a while to be comfortable, now I wouldn't be without it.

But then I hated Apple for a couple of weeks, thought I had made a huge mistake, now I wouldn't go near a PC. Once you get the hang of them, they just work. smile

Horses for courses.
