You don't need to ever turn it off, just close the lid - so you can get round it that way. I you're really bothered, there are 3rd party apps that will do it.
Two fingers on the pad, click brings up the context menu. Then select 'save image as...'. ( Apologies if this doesn't work on Mavericks, I'm assuming it will).
Thanks. Does anyone have any good links to websites or youtube videos for macbook virgins. I'm sure there is far more that this is capable of I just have no idea how to use it.Two fingers on the pad, click brings up the context menu. Then select 'save image as...'. Also, do you always have to press the "down" arrow when scrolling on a sit to be able to bring the page control bat on the right hand side up. Its making one handed use of the laptop very difficult
Watch some videos on the touch pad. It really is great. To make text bigger, do a pinch zoom on the pad like you would on an iPhone. Also check out 2, 3 and 4 finger swipes: up, down, left and right.
Explore the settings for your touch pad - you can set it make a 'click' a light tap, rather than pressing down to actually make it click.

Also, the file system is very different. You don't install as such, rather copy to various directories, so there's no registry to worry about.
It may also confuse you as to where things go. I have a little script that I can give you to run which will tell you you absolute path in the title bar of finder:it helped me no end to work out where things lived and to not get lost when I got my first Mac.

I found screen casts online very helpful when I switched: click. He's a bit Northern but subtitles hardly required.
