AKA inspire RAF_gti thread biggrin

As a long term 'geek' my current home setup is woefully inadequate, it consists of one wireless router, one PC, one laptop and two iPhones with with absolutely no cleverness between any of them. This really ought to change.

So to the ubergeeks out there, now is your chance to show off.

I'm after a wireless media server that can stream to TV and other devices.

Maybe you should look into those!

• Time capsule as my wifi router, and backup drive
• Unibody MacBook hardwired to the TC which acts as my workhorse. Downloads, transcodes, converts, main media server, etc.
• MacBook air for traveling with, and for doing the more complicated stuff that the iPad isn't able to do. Main comp for my iPad syncing.
• iPad. Casual Internet, email, music. Music, etc. Also used to control the unibody Mac from the comfort of my sofa, (MacBook and TC are in a different room upstairs). Can control the TC, torrents, conversions, file management, etc. pretty much most of my things can be controlled via the iPad.
• Apple TV2. Hooked up to my TV, and is used to 100% of my media stuff. Controlled via remote, iPad, etc.

Job jobbed.

Torrents via MacBook via iPad? Sounds intriguing.

How do you find the quality of Apple TV compared to say a decent quality Blu-Ray?

Just to add about appletv2, they really are very good.

Stream any video from your device.
Use airvideo to stream/convert anything from your pc.
Stream music from pc and optical out to stereo.
Rent films on iTunes, we use this all the time, downloads to your desktop.

For £100

Well, current ATV2 is 720p max, (because that is the max on iTunes at the moment). It's fine, to be honest. I had a 42" TV in the US, and it looked fine.

As for torrents controlled via iPad, easy if you have remote access to your client. I use Transmission, which has that ability, so I can add torrents, and control transmission remotely, (even over the Internet if I am elsewhere);

I use airvideo to control conversions remotely, (accross the Internet if needs be), or to stream stuff to my iPad, or apple Tv, as it converts on the fly.

My setup is cobbled together from various old and new bits I've cobbled together.

Using a dell optiplex 755 I bought off eBay as an HTPC and server. It runs air video for movies to the girlfriends iPad. It's also there as a file server and backup device. It runs XBMC which gives a nice front end for media, and I use my galaxy S2 and my girlfriends incredible S as remote controls.

The pc is connected to a panasonic px70 tv and connected to a 2 channel system via a USB sound card and dac.

My main pc when I get it will be an acer timeline laptop off the bay.

I sort of have an upper hand here, it is what I do for a living.

I have a clients 5 bed house, quad garage and annex running on Three iPads.

Whole house Lighting & music, a complete cinema room, living room tv, 5 CCTV cameras. Centralised HD video sources switched and controlled to 6 screens. All viewable & controllable from any ipad in the house.

Oh and Apple Airport Extremes scattered everywhere for consistent WIFI coverage.

Nice little job really.

Busmans holiday!

Loads of test stuff, some of it cobbled together, some not, random cables everywhere.

I did have iPhone control of my tv at one point, just to prove I could do it.

Not much else. Would like to do the same lights, music, CCTV thing, maybe with heating as well here next year. But it all depends on business. Don't want to turn it away, but equally I can't stop it coming in.

It can be fun but also Bloody hard work that one with a couple of very late night finishes (midnight)

When your in a thought process you just don't want to knock off 'cause it takes ages to get back into the same through/programming process.

It does sound as though the kit of choice for the majority here is Apple.

My setup? 2 computers synced together to share files. hehe

I'm waiting on a server in the short future and a MBP in the (I hope, not too distant) future

@VEX

Must be nice to play with all the toys smile

Friend of mine has about 15k worth of Cyrus gear (not rich, collected over years)

I hadn't even heard of them! But I know now that they are pretty high end.

Vex-sounds like a great install.
Mine's very simple... MacPro in office running iTunes for music and films (soon to be moved onto the MacMini under the TV) and Apple TV as the receiver for the TV. Apple Airport Express in bedroom for tunes in there. Al controlled via iPads or iPhones.
Very simple but very effective I think :-)

What audio/video controllers did you use on the job Chris? Are the CCTV cams IP or analogue?

Yes. Enable home sharing, and in the iPod bit, go to shared. You can access the music there.
