So here we go:

1TB NAS ;
Old Toshiba Laptop hosting iTunes;
Apple TV2 / Sky Box / Blueray hooked into....
Panny plasma and Naim Av2;
All hooked together by Netgear (sky) router and controlled from ipad2 and iphone4.

And if I feel the need my 20 year old cdI CD player can still show iTunes the door!

Benjurs the manual for your TV shows that it has an optical audio out.

If you want the simplest solution, get the Apple TV and plug it into your telly with an HDMI lead. Take a Toslink cable from the optical out of your TV and into that little black DAC we spoke about and then into your amp.

You'll have simple and reliable access to your iTunes music and videos (also with the very handy remote app if you have an iPhone or iPod touch) and the sound from this and your TV will be output through your amp. smile
Hi Driller

Thanks very much for this. It confirms what I thought and I do have an I Phone so I'll take your advice!

Thanks all !

Just a thought, your tv might have to be on to get audio from your amp on music only with Remote.

Ready to get my coat, but lots of networking stuff, not much integration outside of that though.

Do I need to book a taxi and make my way to the door?

Yep, good point! I hadn't thought of that! How do others get around this problem?

Do they connect their ATV direct to the amp via optical link (with a DAC)? Then do the same with the TV? I guess so.

Damn this is going to get more expensive than a thought......

Thanks once again Driller for pointing this out.

Cheers

Yes, but you can compare yourself to a builder. you are always concentrating so much on work that your house never gets finished (or started).

I did start another thread with this question, but it seems the posters here my well be able to answer it..
Right, I now have my apple tv set up, however, photos which are streamed from iTunes are only coming into the library in Apple tv in 5 top level folders (all the sub folders have disappeared, meaning all photos are there, but in massive quantities)

What do I need to do maintain the same level of file naming? (having 5 top level folders with 5000 pics in each is a little confusing)

Thanks

They are but still better than a crappy 7" intergrated LCD TV.

ATV outputs audio from the HDMI and optical outputs so you could just get an optical 2 into 1 unit for the TV and ATV. See this thread here

ETA Unless your amp has two optical ins of course...

Hi Bodhi

Thanks for this, from looking at the website don't you need to have a PS3 in order to connect this to the TV?

Otherwise how is the TV going to pick up the stream?
Not at all, it plays content to my Android phone and a couple of other devices fine. The PS3 part of the name is a bit misleading, any DLNA Compliant player will pick it up (which your telly is).

Thanks once again to you (and Driller) for all your help and assistance in this matter!

Which Android player are you using to play the DLNA stream? And will it handle both audio and video?

The mini should ship with Lion. You going for second hand?
ended up buying a new 2.7ghz mini with superdrive, wireless keyboard, remote and wireless trackpad. boggo specs otherwise but i intend to upgrade it myself with SSD and maybe more RAM [not sure i need this tbh]. i'm told it'll be 4weeks delivery, which is disappointing frown paid via applestore UAE but it must be shipped from pluto or something.

the display will be a 46" samsung backlit LED flat panel, which is being installed monday biggrin has network gubbins preinstalled but reckon i'll need to use the mac via my VPN to get iplayer etc.

all in all a good blokey shop, topped off by curry and a few beers smile

still to decide what to do re: hifi as my flatmate says i can clear the spare room and use it for my decks. has made me re-think my system plans.

Wow! I've just downloaded the PS3 Server software as Bohdi suggested...and there it is! All my music playing through my TV!

Nice one.

Now all I need to do is run out an Optical cable from my TV through a DAC to my old amp and I'll have music streamed from my PC. Simples....

OK I know I may need my TV to be on, in order to play my music but it's a workaround from having to buy Apple TV at present.

Thanks to all you guys (Driller and Bohdi especially) for enlightening me!

Cheers
