The type shown tends to have a wide angle and good throw.
I'd suggest 18650 batteries, a charger and a reasonable torch would be the way to go.

I was recently really impressed with my Convoy C8! Nicely made and a good weight etc, then I took it out into the actual field. Do people generally walk their dogs on lawns? It's rubbish unless you want to show someone how bright your torch is 2 metres away.
Are we talking about the same light? I was lighting up houses over 300m away and don't know what the actual range is as I ran out of open space, not candelas.Parabola said:
Just about to buy a better quality charger for my torch batteries.
Think I'll go for an XTAR VC4.
Do I need to make sure it's the 2016 version?
Is Amazon safe to buy from for a charger?
Thanks.
I have the vc4 and recently added a single cell super compact charger for use when traveling. I've no idea what changes they've made for this year's model. I'm pretty sure I've had mine long enough to be a previous version and it's fine.Think I'll go for an XTAR VC4.

I would imagine that Amazon is from the marketplace so usual precautions would apply. I bought both mine from the far East, bang good or gearbest without issue.

Could it just be because I skimped on batteries? I see from a few posts above there are massive differences. Or is that just capacity?
No, there's more to it than just capacity. Some of the more expensive cells are actually low capacity but will put out steady high voltages etc. Better batteries aren't that much more expensive if you shop around and it's an easy way to tell for sure.I keep saying it but I will get out and do some beamshots soon with my C8 and a few others.

This torch is quite something. Unsure I'll ever really need more. Thank god, its over.
I bought a 7.2 a couple of years ago and like you, was sure I wouldn't need anything else either. That lasted about 6 months.Any recommendations for a FLOOD beam torch. Don't need to see through a window 100m away, just my immediate surroundings.
Interested in head torches and hand held ones. 10-20 pounds or so.
Not AAA batteries, prefer AA (or the newer 14500 or 18650 ones which I know will cost more, and then need recommendations for their chargers).

Take your pick of the tints, but go for the 7135x8 driver if you want max output.
Chargers - simple 1 cell unit, or something a bit fancier:

Thanks.
These Convoys, they are a flood beam and not spot?
I see there is a headband available as well.
The S2+ is very floody - there is a hot spot, but it doesn't throw significant distances and the bulk of the beam pattern is flood. These Convoys, they are a flood beam and not spot?

ETA:
If you want a smoother and wider beam pattern you could look at a diffuser like this one:
