I have something similar to this on my Roadster keys at present:
http://dx.com/p/trustfire-mini-02-cree-xm-l-t6-220...

A little heavy and chunky, but very good performance for it's size.
I ended up ordering this as part of my keychain revamp and it arrived today. It is indeed a bit heavy and chunky but I wasn't seeing anything AAA powered (hence narrower) that seemed even close and now it's here I'm glad I went for it. It's got so much punch for a little package - usable flood but a nice tight hot spot. It's as powerful as my 18650 torches but it's not a million miles behind either, and I'd be quite happy using it on dog walking duties.

I don't suppose anyone knows off the top of their head what rechargeable CR123A's are called, and if they'll work in my Ultrafire WF-139 charger? If not can anyone recommend a decent charger that a) will do the job and b) will recharge 18650's? I don't want too many chargers knocking about.

ETA: That keyring torch seems to have either some sort of glow in the dark lining to the reflector - I thought that somehow my tritium keyring was reflecting off it, but it's not. A relatively pointless but very cool plus point for that torch.

Not quite a torch but I just bought one of these, http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/headlamps/performa...

It is mighty bright, I'm on a week long landscape photography expedition in the highlands of Scotland and it has been really useful already.

How much did it set you back? I know Petzl have released some new headtorches recently with reactive lighting etc, so hopefully that'll start pushing prices down for the rest of us.
Slightly out of my price range for a headtorch but that Myo RXP is apparently a climbers favourite, which (knowing how they treat their kit) speaks for it's robustness.

That's the third order I've placed with DealExtreme since Christmas, I've been buying torches like my wife buys shoes. I added some 16340 batteries plus charger to the order, don't know if it's any good but it's cheap as chips. http://dx.com/p/us-plug-ultrafire-16340-battery-ch...

Ordered 30th December, arrived today. Seemed like it took forever but now I've looked at the order date I can't complain about a 2 week delivery time.

I looked at the one with reactive lighting but thought £130 was a bit rich.

The Myo cost £65 from Go Outdoors.

Ola torchy people, I'm looking for a small bite-grip torch - like the TerraLUX LightStar 80 but stubbier. I've found what I need but it's US based and er, problematic, to get.

Basically looking for a civi version of this -

Any ideas gents?

Li-ion ones are known as RCR123's or 16340's. You charge them just like any other Li-ion, but you'll want to charge a lower rate than 18650's, 0.5A (afraid I don't know about your charger).

My package from DX arrived, I failed to notice the required battery type (not regular UK type AAs).....Doh!!!

So I have new toys but no batteries!

Have now ordered some of the correct size/type along with a charger from Amazon.

Can anyone explain how the switch works please?
Is it possible to just switch it off and back on to the same mode without having to cycle through all 5 each time you press it?

Depends. Which torch was it? Quite a lot/most of the cheaper ones don't remember where they were last time (and come on "high" first); that's one of the reasons they're cheap wink

That's positively pricey by DX standards.

The way most of them work is that you click for on, soft press to cycle through the various modes and click again for off. Now some will remember what setting you had it on last time and when you click on they'll come back on to the same mode. Others treat the 'click off' as 'click off and switch forward one mode.' Others will be 'click off and back to the first mode.' Hopefully that makes sense. The easiest way to tell is play with soft pressing (rather than clicking) then when you're on SOS mode click the torch off and on again. If when you turn it straight back on it's on SOS then you know it's got the memory thing. If not you'll just adjust to it, it's a nuisance and the reason I prefer two mode solid clickies but it's not a major handicap - and the output/price ratio makes up for it.

Ahhhhh that's what I was doing wrong, I didn't know about "Soft clicking"
biggrin
