Agreed.
Nitecore i4 charger is a great bit of kit.
Amazon have them and it looks like just what I need. I want a charger and 4 (for the moment) decent 18650'sNitecore i4 charger is a great bit of kit.
Will I get a better deal through Battery Boy or somewhere more specialist than Amazon?
To be honest, so many specialists I get distracted looking at the websites and then my head starts spinning.
This is a classic problem of the internet on a subject where you are a new entrant. Who the hell do you trust?
In researching that you end up going down so many diversions it's the torch equivalent of going onto the Internet to find out how to wire up an outside light according to the new codes, 4 hours later yyou're reading about the sex life of the giraffe. Made up example, honest guv.
Just as a matter of interest, how many old hands have had a daft punt on some whizz bang torch from China for peanuts just for the giggles. Did it even half live up to what you expected?
Nope. Only buy quality products from quality UK sites.
"Whizz bang" chinese crap holds no appeal to me at all.
Price is not top of my list, just a stress free reliable experience.
Same reason I buy nearly all my homewares, white goods etc from John Lewis. Sure, I could get it cheaper no doubt but price ain't everything.

Best cheap thrower I've found. It's a bit bigger than your average 1x18650 in the head, but that's needed to house the deep reflector that gives it the throw.
You got any beam shots? I need (in the loosest sense of the word) another torch for round the house and fancy something throwy - my main thrower (mentioned a page back) is for work use and a few times more price wise.tenohfive said:

The shed is a massive 25 yards away.
From left to right:
A bog standard "200" lumens, stippled reflector, 1x18650
The Trustfire referenced earlier, 2x18650, "1000" lumens
A 3xT6 Chinese cheapy, 3x18650, "3000"
The thrower, 1x18650 "310"
In the kitchen. Trustfire is zoomed almost all the way in, 3xT6 is swamping things a bit.
"200"
"1000" on flood
"1000" on throw
"3000" (This thing is BRIGHT, to be fair, but all about the flood)
"310" thrower
You can see how concentrated the spot is on the thrower. I can't really get pics of a longer distance without going out somewhere (and buying a better camera and tripod!) but take it from me, that spot looks the same on houses a looong way off There is a little spill (you can see the tree near the door, but it's almost entirely spot.
The "1000"-on-flood picture doesn't really do that torch justice, by the way. The "200" looks better, but you can adjust the "1000" to a similar beam pattern and then it'd show much brighter overall in that sort of picture. The full flood setting really is smooth, but it is exactly that, all flood no throw at all.

You've sold me on that Trustfire also. Basically will do everything I want to supplement the head lamps.
It is actually so all-round useful that it's hard to justify anything else, apart from a headtorch for walking or working (I've got a similar 2x18650 T6 zooming headtorch, too ). I still seem to manage to buy one or two more torches every now and again though!FiF said:
Now must stop looking at torches. Why did I open this thread?
Because the voices ask for light. You must never stop looking.I've converted my old 3D Maglite to LED which has given it a new lease of life, but I have a Nitecore SRT-6 which seems to do as good a job. I want something that can really project a beam, I volunteer for a charity and I'm often in the middle of nowhere for up to 12 hours giving directions at night, so being able to point someone to a footpath or something far away is really useful.
Let's say I want to point to something specific up to 500m away, what would I go for? Ideally it'd use a max of two 18650s. Not too bothered about the cost or size, reliability and quality is more important to me, as well as being water and shock proof.

To use as a pointer, I'd consider using a laser rather than a torch.Let's say I want to point to something specific up to 500m away, what would I go for? Ideally it'd use a max of two 18650s. (You did say you weren't too bothered about cost )
Anyone recommend me something for my survival kit, (needs to be AA battery as that's what everything else uses)
I'd like a led torch that you can also put onto a head mount for hands free usage (or a had torch you can detach), not too bothered about mega lumens, good battery life being a higher priority.
Anything out there that's not crazy money.

One like this is probably the best pound per watt using an AA battery http://www.dx.com/p/ultrafire-cree-xr-e-q5-180lm-3...
It won't be too bright as it will be a balance between runtime and brightness. IF you want a lot of light in a small formfactor (smaller than AA) then a 16430 powered cree XML/U2 light will be best. (It's the small silver one in the pic below)
Two new lights arrived today from china, I've built up a collection of various Cree LED lights
The ones at either end arrived today, got a genuine yingding bike light u2 on the right and a 7 Cree XM-L2 torch on the left.
Also got some new panasonic NCR 18650 cells which are meant to be a massive leap in terms of battery tech and have revolutionised the RC scene have 57% more power per gram than lipos .
Batteries on charge atm, really want to see how much of a step up it is lightwise.

Not wishing to be disparaging but those beam shots remind me why I only buy high end torchs.
As I said, between my camera and my setup - holding torch in one hand and the camera in the other - those shots are not the best.I also have torches from Fenix, Surefire, Dree and Tiablo, amongst others. They are all good torches, but they were each 5 to 10 times the cost of Chinese cheapies... and they're not really 5 to 10 times better.
For fun and pointless messing (ie, I already have more high quality torches than any "normal" person would consider are needed (and they wouldn't see the need for that high a quality/price for those, either )) with torches, you can't beat a tenner here and there at DX.

That looks ideal, thanks! A laser wouldn't work at night because a) I might blind some Scout during his night hike or something and b) doesn't really light up the area I'm pointing at http://www.heinnie.com/dereelight-night-master-800...
