Found out why. It's actually the i3E not the i3S, S presumably for Strobe. i3E is fixed with one light output hence why it's cheaper.

This £4 torch can't be any good, surely? (Yet 74 reviews avg 4.8/5)

"Probe Shiny"

I'd buy it just for that... rofl

It's about as generic as they come (I have about four similar torches, all varying slightly), but that's the cheapest I've ever seen one of these.

Bought 10 head torches for work staff. One adapter exploded and this is what was inside - bloody lethal. All going back for refund. From Ebay.

I have one of its clones though mine came with rechargeable batteries and charger for about a tenner. I'd say the reviews are accurate; for £4 it's a bargain.

Bit of a long term review from me.

Black Diamond Storm 160 lumen head torch.

Had it for about 18 months now and it's been absolutely brilliant. It never ceases to amaze me how bright it can go and how far the beam reaches. 70 metre beam is quoted and I can believe it. Can do varying brightness with just a press or tap, and you have the option of single long range beam, twin LED's for close working and a more spread beam, or red lighting for night vision.

Takes 3 AAA batteries and lasts for hours and hours on them.

I've given mine a beating, gets used in the rain and mud when out on the quad bike, and also gets used when I'm at work. It's a real quality item. Very compact and light as well.

Can be had for around £45 online. Highly recommend.

Prime example why buying these cheap LED torches just isn't worth the risk.

There are slightly different risks associated with the expensive Chinese ones...

This is what happens when you leave it on face down on your desk. biggrin

And before you say it, no, it won't polish out rolleyes

Noctigon M43 Meteor. Mentioned earlier in thread.

It was on the medium brightness setting when it burnt my desk eek

And the real irony is that I was using the torch to set up a laser at the time, so I was being quite careful where the laser was pointing, but forgot about the torch until I could smell burning...

I think I have one of those, if not that, it's very similar, which I won on an eBay auction for about £1.50 including shipping from China. It's brilliant. It just stays in my car for emergencies, but when we went to France last year and arrived in the dark, we found it was very bright and had a decent range, especially for something so small. It has a square beam when you focus it in tightly (which someone seemed very upset with on the Amazon questions, I don't understand why), but it's less than the price of a pint. It might not be listed as waterproof, but I got rained on and it was fine.

Ive got t2 of these style torches. One came with 2 rechargeable batteries, the other just a holder for x3 aaa batteries.

Ive had both for about a year now and although they don't get a beating they have been used for a good number of hours and haven't let me down yet. Brighter than my prehistoric Mag light by a country mile of course. cant fault it, but I don't trust the charger, looks cheap so it only ever charges while I have it in plain site.

Cheap LED torches are a revelation.

Cheap chargers and adaptors are not as has been discussed many times in this thread.

So I need to get hold of a new torch by the end of the week. I will be going to rural Scotland and obviously need a torch capable of blistering the paint on the hull of a distant trawler. My budget is up to £50 and currently the LED Lenser p7.2 is looking like a decent choice. Is there anything else I should consider?

This thread is huge so can someone offer a torch that is good for dog walking? Colin is a Springer Spaniel so I would like something with a good spread or whatever the term is for general walking, with a range of 30 feet or so when wide. But also something with a big throw that can be adjusted to a spot in case he runs off or I need to see further away for any reason. Also, bright.

So torchies, what do you recommend?

You could do worse than heading to Aldi and grabbing one of the torches from a few posts up.

The Lenser will be very good but you can do better on line for that money. Time is not your friend though.

I have become a firm disciple in the headlight church and would always recommend including one in your torch quiver.

Maplin have some reasonable ones alongside your lenser.

Happy shining.

Budget ?

I lik the fenix tk51 for dog walking it does both

flood on low while walking press button momentarily for full throw+flood.

I mainly like it because of the user controls. But it is expensive throw is as much as you need flood isn't as great as some others bit of a jack of all trades etc.

The Fenix PD35 is often recommended on here and for good reason, it's an excellent torch from a quality manufacturer.

However, you can't change the focus so if you really want the ability to change the beam pattern then Led Lensers are excellent if a little bit expensive.

Most important bit of information the people on this thread (that know far more than me) need though is your budget!

yes to headlights.

For dog walking, we each have a Thrunite TH10, runs off one 18650. Assuming it's pitch black on the local fields on low setting is fine, can soon be ramped up higher. Pocket torch is usually a lenser P7.2 running off four AAA Eneloops. For longer walks out on open common, or if someone feels they would like something heftier, with a few sharp corners, a Fenix TK51.

Completely off topic, the other morning was out before dawn, if you turned off the headlight and got your night vision back you could just, and only just, make out the path. Dog spotted something, it was a bloke running, head to foot in black, including as we found out, face and hands covered. He ran past on a nearby path while I kept the dog under control as he was really on his reaction threshold with this strange silent runner. We carry on our walk, short while later this clown has turned round and is now running straight at us full tilt and is just a few feet away. No idea what his game was, but a face full of TK51 on strobe and a very cross dog might make him think about trying that trick again, funking weirdo. Why in holy hell would you go running in the early hours in what appeared to be a black morphsuit?

Lol they are out there. It's only since I got a dog and started leaving my mums basement that I started bumping into them out in the wild.
Wonder how effective the strobe would be. Good to have certainly.

Sorry, ideally around £50 or less. I was under the impression good torches were cheaper these days. That Fenix looks like a beast but seems expensive when extremely cheap torches use the same LED? As you can tell, I don't know much, hence asking here.
