are they REALLY that good?
Yes, yes they are. Its quite amazing to be frank and a disproportionate amount of fun!

The recommendations above are sound and a flick back through just a few pages will show up all sorts of options.

Since starting this thread showing off my new torch I find myself with many others, none of them as expensive as the first one.

A lot of them come from far across the world, yet when they arrive belie the reputation that such goods often have. The newcomer is well advised to try the regularly suggested suppliers, but beware the casual Google search for you will find yourself with torches in every pocket!

Right, I'm going to order one of the 5 LED ones for $36 ( these), so before I do, is there anything else from DX which would tickle my fancy!
Ah bugger. I think I may actually need one of those too.

Well she will go shopping and leave me playing with the internet unsupervised!

Why on earth do I think I need 7 torches smile
Get a dog, dog walks and torches are made for each other (well, when it's dark they are)
Or wait until it's dark and then walk the dog.

So did anyone get any nice torch related Christmas presents?

I got some strange looks from my family at just how happy I was with the tritium keyring I received following some hints. Definitely a bloke thing. Thought it would be bigger from the photo's (smaller is better) but it's only about an inch long, so doesn't add any bulk to my keys.

Quite tempted to pick up a few cheaper versions for the camping gear to stick them on tent zips etc.
I LOVE my little key ring bit of radioactive geezerbling. So pleased was I that I found some cheaper ones on some web site or the other and ordered 4. Turns out that these were crappy luminous ones not radioactive and even so, didn't and don't glow no matter how much sunlight they get.

That'll teach me.

I will however be getting some more of the proper ones though.

Came today DOA frown
DOA ia often something small and silly - especially check the negative path is OK - too much grease on the threads, poor contact with the ring on the back of the pill. I've only had a couple of the really really cheap ones that I couldn't bring back to life (usually cleaning/tightening, occasionally a bit of soldering), and IIRC that was bacause the pills had been glued in instead of screwed, so I couldn't get them out to check them.
My one arrived super quick and on an unsatisfactory mix of 18650's is bluddy brilliant.

I'm most happy with it. Worth fiddling with yours Audi to see if it's fatal.

It's heading back into torch season proper now and of course ones mind turns to new toys.

Rather leaning towards a new head torch or two. Anyone got something to recommend?

I may have found my headlamp toy.

http://img.dxcdn.com/productimages/sku_266125_1.jp...

1800lm built in charger and $32 with free postage.

Walking black dogs down a dark black lane with torches to terrify the baddies is a manly thing.

Agreed.

Nitecore i4 charger is a great bit of kit.
Amazon have them and it looks like just what I need. I want a charger and 4 (for the moment) decent 18650's

Will I get a better deal through Battery Boy or somewhere more specialist than Amazon?

To be honest, so many specialists I get distracted looking at the websites and then my head starts spinning.

A question for the congregation.

I have a 3x18650 torch which is terrific. I have a set of 4 batteries. What should I get to use the 'spare' 18650 in. Brighter the better as I walk 2 dark dogs down a dark lane and like a bright torch to scare away the bogeymen.

An option for sure, but pricey.

I took a stroll over to dx.com and now have 3 torches, a head torch and a green laser pointer on its way to me with assorted chargers and batteries for £31.00 odd, including delivery.

Terrific bit of kit on the whole, but I bin the cheap chargers and nasty batteries.

I love torches.

I have been following the various torch threads we have on here and have mostly had cheap torcjes which I use in my job as a surveyor and when walking the dog. And then I decided to take the plunge and on then strength of a review in a walking magazine one of these popped through the letterbox yesterday.

It's BRILLIANT....

I turned into a kid and wanted to do evrything at home last night by torchlight. For a double AA torch to be putting out 245 lumens is impressive enough on paper, but taking my black dog out down a dark lane it was wonderful! This whole torch game is potentially addictive!

And a note of recommendation for http://www.ledfiretorches.co.uk/index.php

what good service in terms of delivery speed and communication.
I quote my original post because I have just 'found' the subject torch after clearing out one of the kids rooms. It's done good service for her on guide leader nights and film crew night shoots all over the world. I'm pleased about that. It's come through unscathed but my glowing praise must now be tested against the super lumen fire breathing light sabres we now discuss and buy.

How things change in 4 years!

Know what he means. Despite currently hanging my nose over a Fenix PD35 Tactical it didn't stop my 12.99 punt in Lidl on their 10W Cree torch. Runs off 3 Duracell C batteries included.

Took it out on last night's dog walk alongside the automatic goto Lenser T7.2 and it held up well. Beam control on spot focus isn't quite as good, but it's a bigger LED in size so that's expected. It throws quite well right to the other side of the field, and on flood not much to choose between it and the Lenser.

Still going to have the Fenix...
I felt obligated to visit the local Lidl and pick up one. Seems a nice addition to the quiver of torches and I don't have another C battery torch.

£12.99. Plus the set of drills, dog lead, windscreen scraper, magnifying thing cheese and drink and it came to 37.99. Bugger it. Man maths in action.

Well, I mean, its not my fault is it. They put these things on e-bay and I find that I actually NEED them.

Now she wont agree as she'll say what's different to the other 14 torches.

All I know is that some time in January I will be the owner of another 12,000 lumens for £22.93 English pounds.

Well.......not entirely sure I have 12,000 lumens ( I never expected to be ) but I do have a nice new headtorch and 2 rather nice additions to my range of budget brightness. The bottom one is particularly nice.

Happy shining.

Hey all, please save me reading 50 pages about torches!

I'm after a really powerful torch to replace my 3D LED Maglite. Up to about £50.

As bright as possible - once winter comes I'll be walking the dog in the near pitch black morning and night (we live in the sticks!).

Any recommendations?
You wouldn't go wrong with a new LED Mag tbh. Not the best, but still a 'good' choice.

If however you are happy to look at using Li-ion batteries (will need a charger and the batteries and a bit of care charing and using them). Then there are loads of super lights available.

Convoy L6

Or the smaller Convoy C8 (I posted about this a few posts back).

Or the Astrolux S2
http://www.banggood.com/Astrolux-S2-CREE-XPL-HI-14...

Really depends on:

-how throwy a beam you want vs flood
-how long a runtime you'll need on high outputs
-how pocket friendly you want the light to be

There really are hundreds of options. But tbh you can get something really good for modest money these days.
Thanks!

Yes, quite happy to use rechargeable li-ion.

The L6 sounds great - where's the best place to buy in the UK? Seems to throw up a lot of US sites.
Will also need recommended batteries and charger - again any make that are particularly good?

A good beam is essential for when I'm trying to locate the hound.

Thanks again!
You really have lots of options and I have made many purchases from Banggood.

In terms of finding ones dog whilst out.....um......dogging, these help me.

I would never consider using any of them as primary leads. They are just shining things so I can see where the dogs are.
