over the last 12 months ive been a teeny bit bitten on the torch front...
First off i bought this to replace my big maglite/truncheon. This is a great torch and i couldnt quite believe how much better it is than my old 6d maglite!
it was so good in fact, i bought another! for the car this time. The most amazing thing here is that its as bright as the bigger P17 but a quarter of the size. ideal for car glovebox duty.
now it just got gratuitous.....its nearly bonfire night and I "decided" that i "needed" a another torch and also a lantern.... the Fenix is a beast... enough said... so ridiculously bright. makes the P17 above look like my old maglite in comparison. Just wish it had a focus pull. The lantern is ace too. 3 days it will go for on a set of batteries.

Well, there are three main differences.The Fenix has 6 modes the Lenser has 3, both claim similar max lumens.
The Fenix has 2 batts, the Lenser has 4, so should be longer runtimes, although LED lenser don't specify what exact LED they use, so it's hard to say.
The Fenix has fixed focus but the Lenser has variable focus which means you can adjust the head from all flood to all throw, and everything inbetween, which can be fun.
I like the Fenix myself, it uses the Cree XP-G R5 LED, a nice mix of flood and throw, depends whether or not you need to throw a very narrow beam a long way, in which case you need the Lenser.
Also the Fenix is waterproof to IPX-8 Standard, has a glass lens, is digitally regulated, anti-roll body, pocket clip...the list goes on.
By the way, how did you get on with charging those eneloops?
Is the Cree XM-L the latest and best LED? will nything with this LED be ridiculously bright? Seem to remember my current torch has a Cree P4 LED (does that sound right?)- will the latest be a LOT brighter than current?

XM-L is the latest, brightest Cree, but the SST50 and SST90 give it some competition. Also how they are driven (electronic stuff),amongst other things, makes a difference to their outputis ths likely to be bright: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/fandyfire-stl-v2-cree...
The torch in the link will be a lot brighter than your P4, but very unlikely to be 3000 lumens.
There is a lot of good information in the reviews in your link.
Bear in mind this torch uses 3 LEDs which will eat batteries, also having 3 LEDs in the same reflector ruins the parabola of the reflector which in turn gives a lot less throw. But it will throw a good way because of the sheer power of the thing.
I would prefer a torch with a single Cree XM-L LED, better throw, better runtimes.
Alright, you've all suckered me in. I need a torch with huge amounts of power, money no object. (No modifications, power must be out of the box.)
Also, since I have a couple of old Laptops, if I open up the battery packs, am I likely to find a few of these 18650 cells lurking there, ready to put in a charger and go?
(The missus is going to kill me.)

This torch has a dedicated battery pack.
Having said that, I believe it contains six 18650s.
Old laptop batteries would be OK for single cell torches but they would not be suitable for this torch.

Still not charged fully mate. They must of had easily 30 hours of charge now. I googled it and it took me to a thread on candlepower forums. I need to discharge them ideally and charge again. The Fenix has 6 modes the Lenser has 3, both claim similar max lumens.

... Don't eneloops come charged up to start with? all the ones i've seen for sale have been. the idea is you use them just like a disposable battery, without having to charge them up first.Any idea on the best way of discharging them?

£315 is a lot of money for something I probably wouldn't use.
And there's bound to be one with 2300 lumens when I get a hose in the countryside.
