There really is no need to go that high. There are some awesome torches a lot lot cheaper. Wasn't suggesting the tk for you I need distance.

I'm sure others will be along with some decent suggestions.

For dog walking and general purpose use the Alpkit Manta is a very handy little headtorch. Not the most powerful or throwable but I use it more than any of my other 3 headtorches (despite being in the middle of the performance bracket.) Light, good battery life and versatile.

I am looking for a LED torch that takes one 18650 battery... Thing is, I would like one that clicks on or off, without cycling through 3 or 5 different settings.

Cheap end of the market though!

Anyone know of such a torch?

Get on DX. Although most of the torches have 3 or 5 modes, you can just switch them on and off; they only cycle modes from a partial press or very quick off-on. There are a few exceptions, like my headtorch, which is so good and was so cheap that I forgive it having to go through low and strobe to off wink

After some buying advice for a couple of torches, anyone got any recommendations while I spend the next week trawling back through this thread?

1) Lightweight head torch. My Petzl Tikka XP2 is great and under 90 grammes, however it's a few years old so there must be better stuff out there. The Mrs wants something light weight for running, and fancies something with the battery pack at the back to balance the weight out. I like the look of the Silva trail runner 2 but it's nearly twice the weight of my Petzl for no more power. something in the £50 range would be nice.

2) Something a similar size to the trusty old 2xAA Maglights. When they first came out they were awesome but the world has move on and I'm getting torch envy. The Fenex PD35 mentioned above looks good, but a bit expensive for my needs, how does the E35 compare? I think I'd rather have something that takes standard AA batteries than fancy ones as I'll sacrifice a bit of power/life for ease of finding batteries.

In the mean time I've just bought myself one of those little Ultrafire Cree Q5's to tide me over.

Just bought a pile of these for my Scouts - the LED output bin is a little on the blue side and the flood a bit ringy around the edges, but for less than a fiver they're damn good; will run on 3 AAAs until you decide to upgrade to 18650s.

(PS: upgrade to 18650s. They're brill. Get rechargeable, protected cells and you'll never go back. You also get a choice of about 10,000 cheap torches to play with smile )

For 1 I'd get a the LED Lenser head 3xAAA copy (lenser H7 IIRC) from the same website that defblade linked to. They're about 6 or 7 quid delivered and superb bits of kit. Used by a lot of mountain rescue teams as they run for ever, use easily obtainable batteries, and weigh nothing. I have the Lenser and copy versions and there is no difference other than gold plated contacts.

I use a Petzl MYO RXP which has the pack at the back and is programmable, out of the box it went Off>Brightest>Middle>Lowest>Strobe>Off but for my uses (landscape photography) I reprogrammed it to Off>Lowest>Middle>Brightest>Strobe>Off

I really didn't need to see the UE version. I used to like my TK35.

Aye, but manmaths says it's a very different torch so you are allowed both!

The UE being a flooder, yours being a thrower.

I was looking at the pics of the recent search and rescue operation in Brighton and it got me wondering, what sort of handheld lights do the likes of the RNLI and other emergency services use?

I did a quick Google but it didn't give me an answer.

JUst thinking of a Fenix TK35, need a thrower torch.

However put off by the comments on the spec sheet re caution using 18650 3.7v

It says OK with the 3.2V 18650 LiFePO4 batteries. But difficulty finding these.

Owners of the TK35 is this a problem in reality? What do you use?

Any other suggestions for a similar(ish) budget torch with a decent throw?

Have head lamps and small cheap pocket flood lamp. Would like a thrower to light up the other side of the river meadows when walking dog at night, especially when he stiffens and looks at something, but I can't see anything. V Spooky especially as it's pie person alley at times.

All suggestions appreciated.
