Head Torch was ruled out (I did suggest it), I have one of the cheap cree single aa torches which was deemed "too small"

something like a mid sized mag-light, rubberised coating she says

I can see me buying a selection of cheapo ones and I'll keep the ones that fail the user experience criteria.

Is it meant to be a torch for lighting things up or for feeling comfortable thanks to having something big and heavy to wave around in the dark? If the latter then pick up a second hand Maglite on eBay. Or some contributors on this thread may be willing to send you theres; I haven't used mine in years and don't know where they are.

I'm not sure if 'she' is the missus or the youngster, but I'd be tempted to give them what they need and not what 'she' wants. I haven't bought a torch with a rubberised coating for years, and I've yet to have water get into a torch. And the 2-300 lumen torches I own are all small but will widdle all over any sized Mag.

For camping a head torch is much more useful - be it walking to the toilet block, adjusting guylines because the wind has picked up, or even just getting fiddling with the tent zip because of an overtight fly - having both hands free is much more useful.

If that's what 'she' is insisting on any tat from Wilkinsons will do, if you want something brighter then this'll do as well as anything:

She is SWMBO, with the £10 budget I can get a 2-300lm and a headtorch so may go down that route.

I camp quite a lot, and am a scout leader. Personally I wouldn't be without a whole range of torches. For a kid however, I'd recommend a cheap headtorch, coupled with something single AA and simple (and aluminium!) put a chunky paracord lanyward on it, bob's your uncle.

Couple more for the collection:

One of my suppliers has a load of them in and I got them for a very good price!

The lenser is a great bit of kit - well weighted and nice focused light.

The unilite is a bit of an odd one - silly bright and heavy. Can't find any shops in the UK but ebay has them for Around £120 which is steep for what it is!

Is the Unilite an FL8? Just googled them, the othersin the range are a bit meh, but the 8 looks like good output for a 2xcr123 form... shame about the price...

So I previously asked about a torch for search and rescue use.

I'd got Maglites, and a LED Lenser P7, a Gerber Recon plus a decent Petzl headlamp etc but needed a bit more ooomph.

That led me onto an Olight S10 as a little personal light, the ultra low level mode is great for retaining night vision if you need to check something close up and the brightest level at 400 lumens is pretty handy, but I still needed a brighter lamp.

Using high level man maths I started thinking of an Olight S30, then a Fenix LD50, then a Fenix LD60, then an Olight SR Mini, then a Nitecore TM26, a Thrunite TM30 or a Niwalker MM15 but soon realised I was skirting around the edges and I needed to get one bought.

Last night I ordered one of these:

5000 Lumens and an external battery pack rofl

I will report back when I get it.

I have been given free reign to buy a pair of torches for the youngsters to take camping in the summer.

Looking for recommendations for something that takes AA batteries,is ideally rubberised and maybe has a handle.

Any thoughts? Can't be too big, and under £10...
Id recommend not getting cree, I got my nephew a cree torch, ended up taking it off him due to him shining it in my nieces eyes, these torches hurt if you shine it in someones else, her eyes where watering for a good hour afterwards.

On Horsell Common, the Martians continued hammering and stirring, sleepless, indefatigable, at work upon the machines they were making. Now and again
a light, like the beam of a warship's searchlight, swept the Common - and the Heat Ray was ready to follow.

Say Hi to the boys in Scarborough Rydale Mountain Rescue team when they get called out to you after someone reports some strange lights on the moors hehe

No UK supplier? Dare I ask how much you paid for this totally unnecessary (for me anyway) purchase?

I found a used one on ebay for less than £200 delivered. Full retail is £399 inc VAT

Sounds like a bargain, not sure I could justify £400 for one though.

I'm not sure anyone can really justify £400 for a torch, but it looks a damn cool thing to own.

That's not as expensive as I thought it was going to be. And 5000mah sounds like a tiny battery for something so powerful (not that I doubt the burn time claims.)
