sorry to revive an old thread but the wife is doing an ultra marathon early August that will involve long stretches of the south downs way at night. She did it last year with a good head torch but the weather was terrible and she felt there were some sections where having a hand torch would have been useful too. Ideally she'd like something smallish, with good light but most importantly long battery life - ideally around 7 hours, as changing the batteries on the run isn't easy. Budget around £50 but i guess i could stretch. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Directly above you...PD35
Although I'd question the quality of the head torch if she feels she needs a hand as well it may just not have been up to the job. Perhaps she needs something more serious like the Zerbalight...

The life's not great on the higher powered head torches though, that one only does 1.5 hours at high power.
Not running an ultra, but for running in the night on Endure 24 I used my 3xAAA head torch (Petzl Tikka I think), and then carried a little cheap knockoff of a Q3 (they're <£5 on ebay) to use when I needed more light. Combination worked really well so I'd say stick with her current head torch and get something like a Q3.

Twas just an example...
You could drop one of these Zebras in as it runs on a single 18650
http://www.fenixtorch.co.uk/Shop/Other-Brands/Zebr...
High: H1 970 Lm (PID, approx 2 hr) or H2 590 Lm (PID, approx 2.5 hrs) / 313 Lm (3.9 hrs) / 142 Lm (11 hrs)
Medium: M1 61 Lm (30 hrs) or M2 28 Lm (66 hrs) / 10 Lm (172 hrs)
Low: L1 3.3 Lm (16 days) or L2 0.4 Lm (2.5 months) / 0.06 Lm (4.6 months) / 0.01 Lm (5.5 months)

She does have a good petzl head torch but last year the weather was terrible and i think the back up is psychological as much as anything. Any views on something like this:

I need to remove this thread from my watched threads list. Keep seeing things that I could so easily justify buying (like the Zebralight H600 MkII XM-L2 that I keep coming back to again and again.)
Has she considered a headtorch as a backup in addition to her main HT instead of a hand torch? I find hand torches a bit of a nuisance carrying for any length of time when running.

Looks ok, firefly mode is nice.http://www.torchdirect.co.uk/rechargeable-torches/...

But the jump down from 1000lms to 240lm is a little steep.
Id buy the PD35
Would anyone care to recommend me a good headtorch for camping? I don't want to spend more than 25 quid really. Bonus points if it has different colour lighting modes.
Also, I have two Cree Q5 cheapo torches that I'm very happy with, but would like something more powerful and with more juice. Can I get anything decent for about 20 quid?
Thanks all!

I use one of the older alpkit head torches, variety of options under 25 quid and most do the different colour settings. Really happy with it. I also have some of the Aldi ones which were about 8 quid and they are fine too but not sure when they will be back. Also, I have two Cree Q5 cheapo torches that I'm very happy with, but would like something more powerful and with more juice. I've bought myself a PD35 (2014) because of the strong reviews on here. Great torch, well built and puts all the other engineers torches on my ship to shame (they hate that). I uprated the battery's too but it's always useful to have spares. Definitely recommended.
Great aren't they? What batteries did you go for?Why did I look in here?.....
What is it about torches that compels normally sane individuals to hit the "add to basket" button?....
I already have half a dozen torches, ranging from an old twin AA cell Maglite, through an LED-converted 5-D cell Maglite, through to a cheap (but mega-bright) 18650-powered cheapy from Amazon and three LED inspection lamps plus a huge Rolson 120-LED underbonnet lamp.
You'd think that would be enough, wouldn't you?
But no - I had to go and read about the PD35....
Then I had to read about decent batteries....
Then I had to read about a proper charger....
So - here I am, just over £100 poorer, but with a PD35, two NiteCore 3400mAh 18650s and a NiteCore I2 charger on their way to me
Is there any way one can block certain sections of Pistonheads?

As it was a last moment purchase I went for the Canwelum 18650 from Amazon, had a reasonable review and were relatively inexpensive. So far so good and they're very keen on customer support judging from the email and packaging I received. If i'd had more than 48hrs notice I may have chosen another make but I was using Amazon next day delivery. But as it is I'm happy and the next 4months should be a good test for them.

Cheers... I need some new ones for mine so will give these a go. If i'd had more than 48hrs notice I may have chosen another make but I was using Amazon next day delivery. But as it is I'm happy and the next 4months should be a good test for them.
