10k lumens from this bad boy!

That's about 3 or 4 times that of a car on full beam nuts

As it's the time of year that the dog walking gets done in the dark, I thought I'd better get Mrs Philthy a decent torch.
A 4D maglite, and one of these does the trick:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001H8DQF0/ref=...

You can't focus the beam anymore, but don't need to. Probably the best comparison I can give, is, it is like holding a car headlight in your hand.

For smaller needs, I have a couple of maglite AA's, with the terra lux 140 lumen upgrade. They can be focused, and have a very powerful beam for a very small torch. One of them has a neat button on/off switch on the base, but apparently they don't make them anymore? Shame really, it makes using the maglite much easier.
I understand there is still a big following for Maglites but things have moved on a bit. If you must have 4D cells, then this is a good choice:

Or an alternative to the 2xAA Mini-Maglite (with a tail switch):

Does look good. Not too expensive either.

From reading around the short list seems to be something like:

- A3 EOS
- Fenix LD01
- ThruNite Ti

Any thoughts?
Much of a muchness, might as well go for the cheapest/brightest/best looking, whatever you prefer.

I like that Fenix.

Need a torch for work, mainly for working in tight spaces eg electrical cupboards or around the engine on a train, again could be outside in the middle of nowhere so as dark as it gets, saw this and wondered if its suitable ?

Very suitable, flood for close up, zoom for big open spaces, very good value too.

But it's not 1800 lumens, more like 5 or 600 lumens (which is pretty bright).
Arrived very quickly from china, along with the head torch I highlighted here, very good and just what I wanted, lots of light and very adjustable at a cheap price, might not last for ever but won't break the bank to replace.
This is the head torch Rigga is referring to, pretty awesome.

Both more expensive, and the 4D cell is less powerful?
I'm no devotee, just impressed with the performance of the maglites.

OK, if you're happy then fair enough.

Even budgeting a few quid extra to avoid using the supplied (and notorious) Ultrafire batteries, 1600 lumens for £16 seems a tad optimistic. What's the actual lumen output likely to be?

I'm guessing somewhere between 500-700 lumens, still pretty powerful for a head torch.

I have Ultrafire batteries and never had a problem with them.

Not sure I'd want to strap them to my head though!

If you want safe batteries then this eBay seller seems to know what he's talking about:

That's not bad at all, I'm quite tempted - even though I don't actually need one.

I was put off by the Ultrafire 18650's reputation, seem to remember the Trustfire ones being reasonably priced though.

Its chuffing bright no matter what the lumin rating actually is ....... used it the other day searching for some cabling in a body end cupboard on a unit, it was a joy to actually be working in a light bright environment, had some issues with light bouncing off some Ali panels but can't have everything , for the money its a bagain

Well...eventually. Mind you it would take quite a while to get through 40 of them, so perhaps a bit OTT.

I just thought I'd link to a cheap source of batteries smile

You had me worried! Thanks for the link. Will probably order some of those up.

I think I might order one of the ThruNite Ti lights too.

Having decided I wanted something rechargeable and CR123 based I've ordered a Fenix TK35. Seems to have the XM-L U2 and gives me the option of running the 18650s, which I've also ordered. Damn this silly thread.

I've got a couple of Ultrafire WF-501B 180 lumen torches that I use for general/around the house use:
http://dx.com/p/ultrafire-wf501b-cree-q2-180-lumen...

They're cheap ($10) torches, plenty bright enough and run on 18650's and they're perfect for round the house/car use. I want a couple more but don't want to wait weeks for them to be shipped. Anyone know of something similarly bright and cheaply priced but from UK sellers?

I took my Fenix L2D (2 x AA) out on Saturday for the fireworks and was amazed at how well it could illuminate trees half way across the park. You just don't expect this much light from such a small torch. *Must stop looking at the TK41*.
