10k lumens from this bad boy!
That's about 3 or 4 times that of a car on full beam

As it's the time of year that the dog walking gets done in the dark, I thought I'd better get Mrs Philthy a decent torch.
A 4D maglite, and one of these does the trick:

You can't focus the beam anymore, but don't need to. Probably the best comparison I can give, is, it is like holding a car headlight in your hand.
For smaller needs, I have a couple of maglite AA's, with the terra lux 140 lumen upgrade. They can be focused, and have a very powerful beam for a very small torch. One of them has a neat button on/off switch on the base, but apparently they don't make them anymore? Shame really, it makes using the maglite much easier.
I understand there is still a big following for Maglites but things have moved on a bit. If you must have 4D cells, then this is a good choice:A 4D maglite, and one of these does the trick:

Or an alternative to the 2xAA Mini-Maglite (with a tail switch):

Need a torch for work, mainly for working in tight spaces eg electrical cupboards or around the engine on a train, again could be outside in the middle of nowhere so as dark as it gets, saw this and wondered if its suitable ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1800-Lumen-Zoomable-CREE...
Very suitable, flood for close up, zoom for big open spaces, very good value too.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1800-Lumen-Zoomable-CREE...
But it's not 1800 lumens, more like 5 or 600 lumens (which is pretty bright).

Both more expensive, and the 4D cell is less powerful?http://www.flashaholics.co.uk/fenix/fenix-tk60.htm...

I'm no devotee, just impressed with the performance of the maglites.

This is the head torch Rigga is referring to, pretty awesome.

Even budgeting a few quid extra to avoid using the supplied (and notorious) Ultrafire batteries, 1600 lumens for £16 seems a tad optimistic. What's the actual lumen output likely to be?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CREE-XM-L-T6-LED-1600Lm-...

I'm guessing somewhere between 500-700 lumens, still pretty powerful for a head torch.I have Ultrafire batteries and never had a problem with them.
Not sure I'd want to strap them to my head though!
If you want safe batteries then this eBay seller seems to know what he's talking about:

Well...eventually. Mind you it would take quite a while to get through 40 of them, so perhaps a bit OTT.
I just thought I'd link to a cheap source of batteries
You had me worried! Thanks for the link. Will probably order some of those up. I just thought I'd link to a cheap source of batteries
I think I might order one of the ThruNite Ti lights too.
I've got a couple of Ultrafire WF-501B 180 lumen torches that I use for general/around the house use:
http://dx.com/p/ultrafire-wf501b-cree-q2-180-lumen...
They're cheap ($10) torches, plenty bright enough and run on 18650's and they're perfect for round the house/car use. I want a couple more but don't want to wait weeks for them to be shipped. Anyone know of something similarly bright and cheaply priced but from UK sellers?

I took my Fenix L2D (2 x AA) out on Saturday for the fireworks and was amazed at how well it could illuminate trees half way across the park. You just don't expect this much light from such a small torch. *Must stop looking at the TK41*.
