I still haven't used the Zero W I bought when they first came out, must resist the temptation to buy another biggrin

I really should dig out the Zero, I assume there must be an updated version of OSMC that runs on it now.

Damn! I just bought another Pi 3 last week. I've just set it up as a Pi-Hole. nerd

I suppose the updated model would be overkill for that anyway.

Don't like it because it makes too many assumptions about data types
It maketh no assumptions. Stick with it and free thyself from the shackles of declarative typing and rigid compile-time type checking that offereth little value and cometh at great cost. Not that it's a religion or anything. Amen.

Sorry, but I'm late to the party and rather than trawling through the last 91 pages, can someone help?

I've just got my first Pi (3) and have put Retropie on it. However, I seem to have a total inability to get any games onto it. My first ROM (Galaxian) downloaded from Coolroms.com worked perfectly, but none of the next 15 I've tried work!

Is there a recommended site to get these ROMs from? Am I likely to be doing something wrong or are they notoriously difficult to get working?

It all depends on what MAME emulator you're running on RetroPie. They all run old versions of MAME and therefore old ROM sets. Perhaps you have newer ROMS which the emulator doesn't understand.

My PC MAME setup is v0.195 but AdvanceMAME on the Pi uses v0.106 and the ROM sets are different. There are image files, (in 64Gb, 128Gb, 256Gb flavours), you can download to an SD card but PH rules means I can't tell you where to get these but you can look for tutorials on youtube.

Thanks for the advice, I think it's a case of finding new emulators then. I'll take a look on youtube. Cheers

Anyone got OSMC running on a Zero W? Tried it when I first got the Pi and discovered that OSMC wasn't updated for it yet, but had another go last night and got the same problem. If I install it via NOOBS I get the original NOOBS interface on screen ok and cans et up the wifi, but once OSMC's installed it loses the graphics. Tried a 2A power supply in case that was the problem but no difference.

I find the Zero a bit on the slow side, to the extent that I am doing dev on a 3+ from now on, then moving the code across for small/cheap automation projects... It really struggled with Youtube.

I've had success with arcadepunks downloading the Infinity 64GB image and the Retroramama Rampage V2 128gb image. Extremely good quality sets both of them. Check out Drewtalks on youtube reviews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC2taLTABU4&t=...

I was using my Pi as a Plex media server but the a new TV does the job nicely, so my Pi was redundant.

I've just ordered some stuff to have it monitoring the temperature in the office (a converted garage), to make sure the portable heaters are doing enough to prevent it getting too cold in there overnight and damaging the stuff in there. Has anyone done this? It looks fairly straightforward,

I've done this using a "Temper" sensor off Ebay.

These sensors are ok - the USB 'driver' can be a bit of an issue on Linux, however mine has been relatively stable for a long time - and I have built error checking into my bash script so that is no value is returned, the previous value is used.

You also need to factor in a correction. I did this by leaving an electronic thermometer next to my sensor, and then adjusted the temperature as read accordingly.

The change is linear, so you don't end up with it being correct at 20 degrees and then massively out at 30 deg.

I note that the sensor I linked to above is a much newer version than mine (I've had mine for about 8 years) so the accuracy may be vastly improved now.

They only provide Windows software, but there are plenty of sources for Linux software to read from the sensor.

Has anyone splashed out on a Raspberry Shake seismograph?

On the expensive side. I've not checked the specs, but not expecting it be able to see the very small tremors at the local fracking site, which would be a shame. I'll have to do some more reading before making the decision about buying one,

Has anyone bought a "Kano" raspberry pi kit? At £150 it seams quite expensive but I am thinking about getting one for my son for Christmas as it should teach him a lot about computers.

I bought my son the Computer Kit for his 8th birthday in September. It's a really nice idea and the case, keyboard etc feel well made. The software has some good ideas - physics apps, hackable Minecraft etc but it's slow. He really enjoys it - I find it frustratingly slow compared to a non-Kano Pi. He's learning Python now and is doing OK at it.

I got a deal on ours, I think I paid £120 or so on Amazon.

Never mind dropping the wired network, I want to see one with dual Ethernet ports (and not shared with USB either!)

Would make a nice router. smile

This *might* do the job straight from the box: https://www.banggood.com/SONOFF-TH10-DIY-10A-2200W...

I've never used this particular sonoff model but I have several of the 'Basic' model which work faultlessly.
