There's people on twitter saying what a epic fail this launch is. Very short sited.

I think it's incredible that this little thing is trending world wide on Twitter and crashed 3 websites minutes after launching.

rs has just got register an interest, not purchase.

Farnell is DoS'd
If you get the RS register an interest option your on the wrong bit of the site (there's a tweet from Raspberry Pi about that).

Both sites still unavailable to me.

Hehe, it probably wasn't a good omen when the place-holder static page started reporting a 500 error 10 minutes before it was even available. I'm guessing today won't be a good day for me to get some component costings from Farnell.

I think it's very much both.

not having websites geared up for the amount of traffic - FAIL

proof of the amount of interest in the Raspberry Pi + bonus media coverage - WIN!

Radio 4 are going with the launch as one of their main stories, so I can imagine that other BBC and independent stations are going with it too. Very reminiscent of the BBC Micro launch. Good times smile

Farnell and RS will only have so much server / database capacity that they can wheel in. I'm guessing that techies pleaded with management for a special event setup but management declined on cost grounds. Well it might cost them a lot of their regular sales today!

I guess, I didn't find out about it until long ago and I can't imagine there's that many people who know about it outside of 'geek' land. Has it been on the news at all in build up?

I've heard mentions a few times on R4 over the last few months.

I managed to get the product page at Farnell at about 6.02am, but when I tried to put it in a shopping basked got told it I couldn't as it had no price (despite it showing a price on the screen). Radio Spares seem to have completely failed.

This was inevitable for the launch as it was always going to have more demand than availability. What hasn't helped is it being plastered all over deal tracking websites attracting a load of attention from people just wanting a cheap xbmc machine.

They had 60,000 hits for the OS in 24 hours and have only built 10,000 of course they've crashed the site.

Searched it and indeed saw the HotUKdeals site talking about it. Being so cheap I guess people thought this was a one off price or summets.

Thing is, they built up so much hype and loads of people warned them the servers wouldn't cope.

Little sense of irony.

To be fair to them, the Raspberry Pie people don't own or run Radio Spares or Farnell so aren't responsible for their websites crashing due to insufficient capacity. Both companies were warned that demand would be high...

Managed to place an order with Farnell and have received a confirmation email. It's a bit unclear if they have stock or not, I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I found at least 4 different ways to get to the Raspberry Pi order page, but they end up with the same error.

Going to give up for now. Will try again later. There's an unconfirmed report on twitter that RS aren't going to start selling until Monday.

I went through the Farnell export site as the UK site was in varying levels of borked. I'm not sure if they still had any stock by the time my order went in, we shall see.

I knew they'd crash. This always happens when a piece of technology goes into fire sale or is newly released. The servers just can't handle the traffic.
