The first one is still a decent tablet. I was using it all day, every day until I got my 2. Bloody good devices.
I still have mine, only things I would really like from the newer models are front camera for Skype, the ability to do full mirroring (have to use iSwifter to watch NASCAR on it and would like to mirror that to the Apple TV) and the retina display, just for the shiny shiny. However, when Mountain Lion comes out for Mac I'll be able to do mirroring via that, and the retina display would only really be useful for watching films, which I only do on the iPad when travelling, so it's not really worth me shelling out loads of money on a new one, as all the apps work the same, I can still take uni notes on it, use it as a much more portable guitar amp, and piss about on it now and again

Had my ipad3 changed without problem. The new one is much much faster, no wifi issues so far, no heat issues , and even appears the battery lasts longer too.

Our iPad 2 has image retention, so I'm hoping to pop into Apple when they're feeling generous!

Image retention?

Basically like the old plasma 'screen burn', where the image stays on the screen even when you've finished with it.

We can see the address bar very clearly, even after it being switched off for a few hours. The home button has also stopped working probably 20-30% of the time.

Yep, they definitely do... Unfortunately.

This now means we have a faulty iPad, iPhone and MacBook Air. Not great on the Apple quality front!

What on earth are you doing to them?

hehe Nothing!

The iPhone is cracking (despite never dropping it). 3GS, and it happened on my previous one, too.
The MBA has a 'delay' when returning from a 'deep sleep' and also a creaking/loose fan. Again, never dropped.

I baby absolutely all of my gadgets, treating them all very carefully. I guess I've just got back luck.

so you have turned off the auto screen shut-off function, and you don't use the button to turn the screen off i presume?

Nope, it's just 'as standard'. It's happened to a number of people from a quick Google, so we're not alone... Just unlucky.

The prickly atmosphere in some responses when anyone posts anywhere anything critical of anything Apple related is really amusing. laugh

Happy new iPad owner (and non Apple-nazi).

Prickly? Not really.

Got my smartcover today. As I sold my ipad1 the tuff-luv saddleback cover went with it. I had a cheap leather one in the meantime. Anyway, got a black leather smartcover, and very pleased this far. Leather feels nice enough, and the hinge works better than I though it would. Nice to have the screen that well protected, yet retain the thinness of the device. Bit expensive, (at €70), but a decent investment.

I bought the cheaper smart cover (rubber, or whatever its made of) when I bought my ipad (even the Apple shop guy said the leather one was too expensive). Clever design but over 50 quid? I think not. Anyway, its fine for carrying around the house but as the ipad comes out with me a lot, I ended up buying a leather case from Amazon. Protects the back and front and I feel more confident it won't get damaged accidentally - but of course adds a bit to the bulk.

Very expensive indeed, when you see how much material is in the thing, (and considering the amount of material in my Tuff-luv saddleback, which was made with several cows it seems). But it is nicer to hold, weighs next to nothing, still feels leather, and has the nice hinge bit. It's a luxury I suppose. A nice one.

Nowt wrong with that - when you think the ipad itself costs what it does, another 50+ quid on the cover is nothing. I paid 43 quid for mine - was a Kavaj. At least it feels like it should be relatively costly (never paid that much for a case before). The mart cover is far more flexible though. Both designed to do a different job.

Further to my comments above, I went to an Apple store to try and get the iPad fixed. No luck. I spoke to a Genius, then the manager, then the technical guy. Eventually left very unhappy.

I complained to Apple HQ, and after a bit of investigating, they're replacing the iPad for a refurb unit. I'm happy with that!

Now to sell the iPad 2 and buy an iPad 3!

In my own disappointing news, my new iPad has developed a hairline crack across the screen - after one month. Not sure exactly how that happened (I baby it in its protective case and very rarely take it out of the house).

I've a sneaking suspicion that it happened during my first deep recharge cycle (from 2%, and left on charge overnight). Appointment with the geniuses tomorrow.

Getting too hot causing the crack, do you think?
