Depends what it is you want to stream.
If you use iTunes, then AppleTV is hard to beat at £99

What tech have you got at the moment?
Where are you streaming from?
PS3 and xbox make decent media centers.
If you have apple stuff then an apple TV integrates easily.

ClickyDoesn't work with Mac though, for this I'd recommend an Apple TV 2 with Airflick app

I thin Rokus are now available in the UK via Amazon. I've got one over here, hooked up to a NAS running Plex media server, but you can run the server on a laptop and stream to a wireless Roku I believe.

I have video files in avi and mpg that I usually play on VLC on the computer, I don't really want to convert them all to Apple format.

You don't have to. I believe AppleTVs play avi out of the box.
No idea how they work in terms of streaming local content though, or even if they can without jailbreaking - I've not played with one.

Which LG TV? Is it a "smart" one? It may have the Plex client built in.

So if I convert all my video files and my DVDs to .mp4 and buy an Apple TV I'm sorted?

Please don't to down that route. Why is it always Apple gear that ppl run to?
Look into a product called WDTV live. It's a box the size of a fag packet that connects to your pc or other media (wifi, wired or even SD card) and plays a massive selection of formats.
Way better than anything apple IMHO.

Pops OK, I'll have a look. I would prefer a device that will play all formats.

A lot of modern tvs have built in dlna, so you may not need anything, depending on your tv! Otherwise a ps3 has much more to offer than an apple tv. Oh and it is more expensive, but for what you get it's worth the difference.

So these boxes like Apple TV and WDTV plug into your TV with an HDMI cable do they? and then the box receives a wireless signall from your PC?
Have I got that right?
