Interesting, can they be plugged into an extension lead?
My old ones didnt like power extensions , but I replaced them with something similar to these these - power pass through so you just plug this into the wall then the extension into it. Run an ethernet along with the power extension to your device job done

Brilliant!

However, I really like the look of the WDTV.

I will have to think it over.

......or maybe an Xbox off eBay

I went for the netgear in the end but as I understand it the WDTV does the same job.

Technika BRSS10

I found this blurb on the Internet, not sure what it all means:

Connectivity includes an HDMI input, USB input and ethernet socket, for accessing BD-Live content. The BRSS10 can either bitstream HD audio formats or decode them onboard and outputs LPCM.

We've got a WDTV Live hooked up to the bedroom TV, pulling media files from the HTPC downstairs via wifi, and aside from it occasionally needing a gentle nudge to reconnect to the shares on the HTPC it's been faultless. It also has built-in support for iPlayer and a few other similar things I can't recall ATM, which is a bonus.

Is there any options available to someone who still has a CRT TV?

Cheers. I will read up. Could an old spare PC be an alternative?

A PC is an alternative but the Xbox is essentially plug and play. I am using mine through an old Goodmans CRT with no problem at all.

After considering all the options kindly offered here, I have come to the conclusion that a WDTV Live and a shared folder containing video files on my (always on) PC is what I need.

DABS.com are knocking them out for £76.99, unless anyone knows anywhere they are cheaper?

At some point in the future I need a NAS so everyone in the house can access it and add files to it (we have 4 desktops, 2 laptops, a netbook and various other devices).

Thanks for all your input, I've learnt a lot.

You can do this with the WDTV LIVE HUB (1TB) out of the box, why buy a separate NAS? Worth paying the extra in my opinion.

Are you a Costco member? Iirc, they are on offer for a similarly competitive price.

On other thing. Once up and running, depending on the firmware it comes with, you may spot the new firmware download option. The penultimate release had a wave of improvements so make it one of the first things you do perhaps.

All the best.
