Update:
I now have my second-hand (off eBay, less than half price) WD TV Live Hub set up, Firmware updated, and running like a dream.
300 Movies installed, converted to AppleTV format with Handbrake (and AnyDVD).
einsign you were right the 'Hub' version is great.
Word of warning though: The WD TV Live has built in Wireless and the WD TV Live Hub does not.
You have to purchase an exact model and version from a list of recommended USB wireless network cards, not a problem though, 5 quid on eBay.
Cheers to Popolou, einsign and everyone else who contributed.

dontfollowme said: Cheers. I will read up. Could an old spare PC be an alternative? Absolutely. Stick XBMCbuntu on to your old PC and you're sorted. You might need a graphics card upgrade if you want to stream HD content, but otherwise, you're set. I just did the same thing with my old PC. Rebuilt it into an HTPC case and added a new graphics card. It can now handle absolutely anything you throw at it, with a lovely user interface and all controlled from my Android phone.

Cheers to Popolou, einsign and everyone else who contributed. Glad to hear you're up and running. It's a simple setup that just works. Also, if you download a dlna app for the phone/tablet you can even 'push' media to the streamer.
