Just had a play with an iPhone5. What an utterly stunning case that is! Looks like a solid billet of aluminium was used and then they diamond cut the outside just like alloy wheels. The screen looks 'nice' and after comparing it to my plastic cased S3, the S3 feels inferior. That is until you start to move around the screen in fruit-farm mode. The little animations are slick, button press is very precision but I was bored after a few minutes and it felt very apple..as if it were an Iphone4.. well it is really.

Why can't Samsung make a decent case? They would have it all if they did. I'm going to stick with my S3 for now but will look out for the Note2 when that is released. I can see what people say about the iPhone quality but I want a phone to do more - infact to replace my desktop and the iPhone is the difference between a thick blonde and a pretty librarian - you would love to be seen with the blonde but would prefer to live with the librarian wink
My desire hd was made out of metal, when it had a case on you couldn't tell what it was made of and without the case, the metal would scratch. This was the same with my HTC hero.
For me the plastic is nice and light and so far no scratches smile
Yes, I had a DesireHD before the S3. The S3 is miles ahead with everything else, and I thought the HD was really heavy and cumbersome by comparison. The iPhone5 is a bloody construction marvel and somehow to me, because it's well made, it almost excuses the brick-like construction. I really want to own a phone that looks and is built like an iPhone5, but isn't stuck with the boring same old graveyard of icons that IOS is.

The whole mobile scene is bloody exciting and where the hell are we gonna be in 5 years time? eek

Hmm, have you held a One S? Really, really solid phone, looks amazing (imho) and feels very strong. It's a new phone and spec-wise a direct S2 rival.
Anyway, there's something for everybody. The iPhone 5 is very solid build, but it's still only a 4" screen, doesn't really compare against a 4.3", let alone a 4.8" phone.

My HTC Sensation felt in every way a more solid, expensively manufactured phone than my S3. As soon as you start using them, however, it's equally immediately obvious that much more has been spent on the innards of the S3. The step up in performance was staggering.

Why not just use a tablet? Where do you draw the line?

The size of the iPhone is far more convenient to carry (perhaps the Android people always wear combat trousers or something).

Sorry, I didn't say that it's "too small", just that it's not comparable. However, thinking that "the android people" need combat trousers to carry a One X or SGS3 just shows you actually never put one in your pocket.

The same arguments came from the same side when manufacturers first came with 4" screens for their mainstream phones. It's all a matter of preference, and you clearly got yours as I've got mine.

Actually, I have - it's too big to comfortably slip into a trouser pocket. There comes a point where something is just too big for its purpose and I think the SIII is getting to that point for a mobile phone. I have a friend with a Note and that is like carrying a hardback book around - maybe they'll start coming with shoulder straps.

I've got a 30" waist and can keep my S3 comfortably in my front jean pocket without it being too tight. I'm interested to see if I can do that with the Note2 when it comes out! hehe

rofl

Sorry I accused you of exaggerating, obviously I was mistaking hehe.

You know a kindle? Ever held one? Now that's a lot bigger than a Note, and not even close to being a "hardback book".

I agree the Note is too big for a phone, but you're really exaggerating the sizes of the things. On top of that, it's a very popular device, so clearly not everybody shares your opinion.

Had my S3 since release and I have yet to encounter a pair of trousers that I can't fit my phone in the side pocket.

Having had an iPhone 4S and then switching to an S3, I have no issues with carrying the S3. While the screen is a lot bigger, it doesn't impede my trouser choice or travel arrangements.

Seems like a stock comment from iPhone fanboys, "It's too big to fit in trouser pockets" etc. It's not true and when Apple release their new mini iPad, I have no doubt that argument will disappear...

Well you started it tongue out

All I'm saying is that it just seems like there is one argument against a larger screen and that is the inconvenience of the size, an issue I have never come across.

If the iPhone 5 had a 4.5" screen, none of the iPhone crowd would have complained. My main reason for switching to an S3 was due to the larger screen. In a perfect world my phone would be the S3 chassis and Apple's iOS, but sadly I can't have that so made the switch instead.

If Apple do eventually decide to increase the screen to a similar size and Android haven't streamlined their software, then I have no doubt I would move back to Apple.

In a perfect world I'd like something which looks and feels like an iPhone 5 with a version of iOS allowing a degree of Android-style personalisation (without the flakiness).

Check out the Sony Xperias in that case, my Xperia S is built like a brick outhouse, feels pretty good in the hand too. It's also survived a few drops onto solid surfaces with barely a mark. Judging by reviews the new Xperia T is along the same lines.

Bottom line. 0.8" makes sod all difference to the size of something in your pocket but a HUGE difference the viewing pleasure provided by a phone screen.
