I showed him my S3. Hold down the power button to bring up the choice of silent, vibrate or ring and you're done. He was amazed!
Or just hold down the volume adjusting button to turn volume all the way down when it gets to the bottom is is on vibrate only, touch it again a it's totally silent and vibrate off.
Or swipe down the top info bar and tap the sound/vibrate/mute icon twice.

I reckon the CM10 (Jellybean) and CM9 (ICS) ROMs should be right up ypur street mate:
CyanogenMod 10
Also you don't need to root your S3 to install new ROMs unlike most other handsets. Would highly recommend CM9.

Oooh! That's interesting!

Our corporate security policy says, pretty much word for word, "root/jailbreak your phone and you will be sacked". It says nothing about changing the ROM without rooting it! smile

Would you like to try and explain that to them though if it did get mentioned?

Admission time.

Got my Red S3 yesterday.

It seems (by pure chance) I already have a Google account. Apparently I have a picasa too.

It looks beautiful. I found YouTube and HD looks ace.

I cant work the inbuilt browser. I got chrome, like I use on my PC and its better but still not brill as its very difficult to go to bookmarks - too many clicks.

Some videos and things that play in full screen on ios only display in tiny windows.

I cant work the phone properly yet. I keep pressing the wrong buttons or pressing buttons by accident.

I'm not sure I like it.

I have no idea what JB, ICS, romming, root, beans, widgets wiz or loaders are, and I don't like that.

I got an iphone years ago turned it on and went. Now I'm just annoyed and I've been fannying around all morning trying to work it. I'm for from a complete tech-noob, but how long is it going to take before this phone actually does what I want?

Whats wrong with the stock browser ?
Plenty others to try - firefox, opera, ICS Browser+, Dolphin - most of these are two clicks to get to bookmarks.

Most stuff should play in full screen - what apps/web pages are you looking at?

Just take your time to remember the buttons, it becomes second nature eventually.

JB = Jelly Bean. Its the current version of Android
ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich. Previous version of Android, its what your phone currently uses
root = Kind of like jailbreaking.
ROMs/Romming = Customer version of Android that you can load on to the phone. Lots of different ones around.. if you want to fiddle just take your pic.
Widgets = Stuff on your home screens that are app icons (like the weather thing). Lots and lots of them out there. They generally offer "at a glance" with a subset of functionality of the app.
Loaders = More or less the UI element. Most phone manufacturers take base Android and add their own UI to it. Samsung uses Touchwizz, HTC call theirs Sense. You can have a play with aftermarket ones like Apex and Nova - they are in the play store.

What is it exactly you've been "fannying around" trying to do ? What isn't working ?
Is it just the fact that you've got much more to play with now and don't know what to do next?

Forget about loaders, root and ROMs for now, not really needed at this point.

About 2 weeks before you stop pressing buttons by accident, a case helps a lot

Try MX Player, it's my favorite video player. Seems to play every format going and simple to switch between Full Screen, Stretch, Crop, Fit, etc.

I take it your phone came with the "Wonders Of Nature" sample video? Really shows off the screen, doesn't it?

I seem to get green for work email, blue for personal, purple for my news feed, solid green for charging and red for low battery.

I have no idea at all ....

I get texts ... sometimes there blue, other times there green!!
I hadn't put that much thought into emails and accounts ... I'll maybe keep an eye on it a bit closer from now on!

Hi chaps. Been reading this thread with interest as I need to replace my bberry curve and I don't want an iphone and I like the look of the S3m

Main question how is it for veiwing docs, email handling and the general business stuff. If it does that well enough then I'll go for one. I'd really like to have something with a decent screen and all the toys but it must work for me as well.

Cheers.

For reading & viewing docs, surfing, it's in a league of it's own, mainly because of the screen. Coming from a curve will be like stepping out out of a Ford Fiesta into a Nissan GT-R. As for typing, that just takes some getting used to. I'd advise everyone to try out "Swype", once you get the hang of it it's really amazing.

Rumours have become louder and louder, announcing an S3 mini with a 4" (note the wink to Apple) display.

That's a very smart move if true. The size of the S3 is alienating a lot of people. I wonder if the battery life would be significantly improved too - smaller screen but smaller battery...

Hmm it's always a trade-off, the big phones (notably the Note, as far as it's a phone), have brilliant battery life when not using the screen, but it diminishes once you turn it on.

I think, like the one site mentioned it's also just making fun of Apple: look, this is our "mini" flagship, sports a 4" screen for the women and small-handed hehe.

There's a couple of office suites you can put on it which let you edit word, xls, powerpoint and so on, and the screen is definitely large enough for the job.

You wouldn't want to start a 50 slide presentation from scratch on it, but for browsing, tweaking and showing people stuff, it's more than up to the job.
