On one device remove ("forget this network") any prior evidence of the previous working connection. I'd try the ipad first as its possibly the easiest to configure?

Seemingly there is no way i can fathom to get the ipad to show the networks it remembers, let alone try to remove any. Tried it on the MacBook and it basically again couldn't find the network and gave me a connection timeout.
Settings > WIFI

Try adding the network by entering the SSID manually?

Looks like the wireless is doing zip. It will have to connect to something before it can transmit, or receive anything.

Have you taken it to a bare bones config? No security, 2.4 g,N and see what happens.
Looks like i have. Still no wifi.

And the SSID is set to broadcast?

I would double check that the time and date on the router is correct, ive had an issue like this before where the date/time reset after a firmware update.

Go into the router config it should be under 'General' or something like that

Might seem counter-productive but reboot the router after making changes. Try changing to a different SSID remembering to reboot router after the change has taken effect.

If you're on the sauce leave it till tomorrow. . . . from experience biggrin

Not sure how to multi quote but

Alfamale - apologies, i've already done all this automatically and manually on the ipad - no luck

The Heretic - SSID is still set to broadcast

Rev Limit - i've checked the security logs and funnily enough the time is one hour out. Next question of course is, how the hell do i change the time on it?

Finally, looking at the security log i'm getting repeated "administrator login failure" then "administrator login success" at exactly the same recorded time. Nothing to be worried about do you think?

Right, i've managed to sort out the time issue - the savings daylight option wasn't ticked and now is. Reboot here we come!

Have you got a smart phone you can set up as a wifi hotspot just to ease your mind that your devices can still connect via wifi before you carry on tackling the router?

GRRRR!!!! Reboot done and still nothing. I'm able to see other peoples wireless networks but not my own.

So, changed the network names, the channels they are transmitting on and success (sort of). The g channel is now visible and connected!

BUT!!! Tried to add some security to the system and the config screen locked me out. Multiple reboots, and a much greater understanding of how these fecking things work has resulted in a few realisations.

1. There was nothing wrong with my powerline adaptors which i bought and sent back recently
2. There is a new net user round the doors using the same channels as me
3. The router went norks up at the same time (i've tried to access it again but to no avail)

All in all, a series of coincidences resulting in me spending most of the night learning as opposed to drinking.

Ok, that's a lie, i've been doing that as well...

Thanks to everyone who has suggested things and helped me - greatly appreciate it.

Just take it slowly and be patient. Have a read through of the relevant sections of the above-linked manual if only to discover Who Done It : D

Back to bare bones wifi, different SSID. REBOOT router before trying a device connect. When trying a connect be patient. Not always instantaneous.

I would hazard a guess your old router still works but get the new one working first before fiddling with the old one!!

Ok, i've been having a look at it for the last 1/2 hour and have it to a point i'm happy with - i think. It seems as though i can maintain the wireless networks as long as a) the SSID is broadcasting and b) there is no security on it. I did have it set up with some security but the Sony is cannot recognise that method of password due to it's age.

It's not ideal but at least its up and running.

I originally thought that there was nothing wrong with the first router but i tried it again last night after seemingly getting it back up a and it couldn't connect to the net at all - no signal whatsoever. Still, i only bought it in February so we're still covered under the receipt / warranty.

Try a basic WEP key with the Sony, once you've got a stable connection. There might be a wifi device driver update for the Vaio to enable WPA/WPA2 but that is for another time maybe.

I did try that but the ipad wouldn't recognise the WEP key when entered. Nothing is simple is it?

Reboot the ipad and try again. Be patient (sorry). Make sure case sensitivity matches the WEP key. Sounds un-necessary i know.

Tried this but to no avail. Also, as soon as any form of security is applied to the wireless settings, none of the devices can locate the networks and that's with the SSID transmitting.

iPads do not like WEP. WEP is being made obsolete so it has virtually no support.

So then, the wireless will remain on for a period of time and then will just disconnect and the networks cannot be found. I have to connect via ethernet and then reset everything. This lasts for about 1/2 hour max and then disconnects again.

If i was a paranoid sort, i'd think someone was mucking around with my wireless network - turning it on and off to brass me off!

So trying to install macstumbler or istumbler to check the wireless activity around the doors and for some reason, both crash "unexpectedly" upon start up. Anyone got any suggestions for software which might do the same sort of thing?
