I put a thread about this a while ago, and I'm well aware thats unwise to modify it. So I've decided to try and upgrade my laptop computer to Windows 7, I wanted to know if after I (hopefully) upgrade I can go into the old Vista files and delete the winsxs folder which currently consumes 13gb of my 56gb hard drive.

Thanks

Okay I know about that, but I'm planning on removing all software and starting again, with a new operating system.

I don't want to spend money on a new hard drive when I have a perfectly good one.

IIRC when you upgrade Windows it makes a new C:\Windows directory and renames the old one. Once you're done with the upgrade you can delete the old one.

It's not like the olden days where you could have Windows NT and Windows 3.11 running out of the same C:\Windows directory, and the OS would be upgraded in-place.

Let us know how it turns out.

If you're feeling especially wussy, you could use the Disk Cleanup tool to do it, as it detects previous Windows installations.

nono

Winnt and Windows 3.x etc. never did run out of the same directory.

Windows NT (3.1 / 3.51 and 4) always installed in C:\WINNT

Windows 3.1 / 95 / 98 / Me installed in C:\Windows

IIRC it was Server 2003 that led the change to installing in C:\Windows

Sorry - I wasn't clear.

I was referring to defaults - of course I know you can install in any directory!

biggrin

The winsxs folder will still be used by windows 7, so i don't think the OP will be able to delete it

ISTR that you could install NT (3.5? 4?) right over the top of 3.11 and then dual boot them. Hence running out of the same directory.

I can't remember if NT 3.51 / 4 would install to a FAT partition without over writing io.sys / msdos.sys.

IIRC you couldn't dual boot them without some kind of boot manager, and even then, they needed to be on separate partitions. (I used system commander to do this I think..)

But you certainly couldn't install NT to the same directory as (WFW) Windows 3.1 / 3.11.

All installed fine, and now I have 30gb of free HDD space which is nice to have. Windows 7 winsxs file is 7gb but I left that alone and deleted the windows.old sxs file.

This thing is like a new computer. Really pleased with it.
