I am due for an upgrade on my contract.

My options are

iPhone 3, free

iPhone 4, £39

iPhone 4s, £49

Which would you go for? Is the 4 or 4s worth the extra cash?

I will be keeping the phone for 24 months.

4 is a big improvement over the 3, the 4S is less of a step ahead over the 4, but slightly improved.

Personally I'd wait and see what the 5 brings, even if you don't go for it you can pretty much guarantee the 3 will be dropped and the 4 will take its place - shouldn't be too far away and given you're committing to a 24 month contract, you'll probably be glad you did.

Any rumours on when the 5 is out? Or what new features it will have?

You won't find anything other than speculation right up until they announce it. A safe bet would be more oomph, better CPU and camera, but you'll hear plenty suggesting massive screens, coffee making facilities and more. Software is where you'll see bigger improvements and evolution.

As for when, your guess is as good as mine, but it'll be towards the back end of the year I think, Q3/4. Keep an eye on here: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iPhone

Alternatively, if you can't wait, just get the 4/4S and be happy with it as it's a cracking device smile

I can guarantee the 5 will be way way more than that when it eventually comes out. You can wait for new models, or just jump on the wagon. I'd not take advice to wait for the new one and get a 4S now.

If you cannot decide, ensure that at the end of the contract to change it to a calls only v
Contract or you will be paying extra for your existing phone. When you have decided which phone then changr the contract back when you upgrade.
Currently my choice would be iphone 4 with at least 32gb memory, just the right size for harrys lap timer app

For an extra ~£2 per month, get the 4s. Even if the difference doesn't mean much now, it will once the 5 hits the scene.

4 is a leap over the 3 but for the extra few quid go for the 4s. The 5 probably won't appear til later in the year and even when it does it will be impossible to get one for a while because of all of the idiots that insist on upgrading on day one and queuing for a mile down the road from an Apple store.

Having owned every iPhone model (8 handsets in total), I would say that the 4S is the complete package, as is the "new" iPad 3. If you can afford the difference, it's definitely the one to go for

Go for the 4s if you decide you want the 5 when it comes out, you'll be able to get a decent bit of money to cover it from selling a 4s. Chances are the 3G and 4 will be well behind on the price by then..

No it's not. The 3GS running on 5.1 is 90% of what the 4s is. Iv got both, the 3 gs is very tough , the 4s less so, the 3GS good as a work phone. Yes I no the 4s has a better screen, camera and filming, but for most people browsing the net the 3GS is fine. Don't forget also the newer phones are only faster if you live in a strong 3G area, something a lot of people over look. That 2 yr 4s contract is popular , 36 quid a month, 800 quid then in total assuming you never breach your data and minute levels. A lot for a phone.

Get the 4S.

If you get anything else you'll want to upgrade to the 5! Being one generation behind is fine, but you notice being two or more behind. So get the 4S now, ignore the 5 and in 2+ a bit years time you can go straight to a 5S biggrin

get the 4s, the 4/s is miles better than the 3gs but the 4s is worth an extra £20 if not for resale value alone.
id wait a few months for the 6 (the next one...)

Got both sat next to me as I type this and your experiences are very different to mine it seems.

For all there's a lot of similarity due to the shared OS, the 3GS is much slower in general operation - very noticeable when opening chunky apps, manipulating lots of data, even switching between apps is far more 'laggy'. The screen is awful if you're used to the one on the 4. One thing in the 3GS' favour is it's much nicer in the hand but that and price are the only things which swing in it's favour over the 4 from my experience - my 4 has been far, far tougher than the 3GS.
