If you are planning on taking it around with you then think abut the 3g option but if it will never leave the house then don't worry about it.
I've had the 1st gen iPad since they were 1st launched and it has only ever left the house 3 times. It's only ever used for surfing so I don't regret going for the wifi only model.
I bought it as a bit of a novelty but I couldn't be without it now.

We've got a WiFi iPad, and have never had any reason to need 3G.
Also, it's £100 more, not £50 more. On the 16GB model, that's 25% more. You then have to pay for the sim card.

We have a wifi only 16gb iPad 2, it is wifi only because it is used at home, which is also why I only bought the 16gb version = why store when you can stream.
Not really sure what Frosted is on about in this thread.

There's no 3G signal where I live and 90% of the time there's wifi where I use the iPad - home, garden, office, coffee shops, pubs. Only exception is on the train where there isn't a continual signal in any case and I can easily tether to the iPhone when there is. My newspaper downloads automatically to the iPad each morning and I read that on the train.
Wifi only is more than fine for me and I've stopped carrying a laptop.
I guess it depends on your usage patterns.

I want to do nothing more than read rubbish on the web, either sat on the couch or occasionally in bed if not using a desktop (or equivalent). My router is but a few yards/feet away when at home and I get wifi access as part of broadband (not forgetting pubs, fat Macs etc) should I want do the same in anywhere other than the back of Bourne (sp?). Laptop is impractical in those scenarios, so either phone or tablet. Either way, why would I pay a ton plus monthly for capped & flakey access when I can get 99% of the same for £0.00 additional cost?

Yes i plan on tethering to my iPhone when out, but TBH i think it will spend most of its time in the house.
So don't see the point in spending another £100, plus another bill to pay each month.

Had the wife's laptop on it today as the broadband was down all morning. Can't imagine why anyone with a smartphone (which I'd guess is a large percentage of tablet buyers) would buy a 3G one. Portable hotspot isnt supported on some networks including GiffGaff, that said my monthly bill is £10 on the iPhone and £5 on the iPad so still less than half I was paying on O2 when I had the hotspot feature available. Tis on android. I guess iphones tie that function to the SIM?

Well just to prove I hadn't gone insane I've just opened NavFree and asked it to plot my direction to work from where I am now. It's doing this quite happily via GPS and I even made sure I turned wifi off before I tried it. It's not tethered to my phone either, it's using it's own GPS. I have done this on holiday with the other half holding the iPad. In fact I have briefly looked at getting a car mount for the iPad to use it as a giant sat nav unit.

Well, yes. I don't recall Tomtoms or any other satnav having 3G 5 years ago

Quite sure, it even says "poor GPS" on the screen because I'm not near a window right now. I'm sure it would show no GPS if I locked it in the cupboard. It has my speed in the bottom left - although running the length of the lounge doesn't seem to be enough to make it register and causes the cat to get a little worried!
I might use it tomorrow morning to drive to work purely to test but I'm quite certain I've used it before over the west coast of Scotland when my phone was busy streaming music over bluetooth.

You see, the gps unit is part of the cellular components, and as the iPad wifi version has none of those, then I can't see how you can have gps. Remember, the device can locate itself using wifi addresses.

Well it's locating itself very accurately My IP address puts me several hundred miles from my actual location. As I say I'll know by the morning, too lazy to go and try now.

Well, you have a very odd model. Are you sure it isn't a 3G if you do have GPS.
