Just wondered if anyone else is going down a similar route & might be able to offer some advice along the way.

Quite simply after the last PC died of god knows what, it got me to finally ditch the last bit of PC Microsoft junk from our home/office desk & go with the latest in phone/docking/lightweight'ness. So that's mobile phone based everything pretty much.

I'm still a mac fan of old so I've still got a Mac G3 Powerbook (1999 vintage & still working!) on the desk that doubles as an email machine & hopefully print server. I've still some modifications to make & some tinkering to get all up & working 100%.

System is:
2 x Motorola Atrix 4G Android smartphones (wifey & I) with webtop mode when docked into:
Motorola work & play dock system to HDMI monitor/TV/DVD combo thing or
Motorola Lapdock (mini laptop thing the phone plugs into)
HDD backup system on USB too
Plus
Mac G3 Powerbook plumbed into a printer/scanner on the network/wifi router

All I have to do now is get the printer to work via cloud or over the wifi network or something similar, which can't be too difficult he thinks??? might mean buying a wifi printer scanner but they don't all appear to do what one might think...

So wherever I go I've got everything with me all in one place, plop the phone in the dock & away we go, system fires up in 10 seconds & a maximum of 50w of power consumpion too smile

Reminds me of my Powerbook duo days & a Motorola Flip phone & PCMCI Modem wink

The email based ones does the printer have its own email client thingy or does it need to be connected as such

Hello 14.4k, we use google cloud print which is one of the email based services for our Kodak wifi printer to print from droid and iPads.

Almost there....

Had a bit of a mare with me keyboard, unbeknown to me if using a USB keyboard you have to plug it into only one of the 3 USB dock ports or your keyboard does odd things. Spent a day looking at fixes before it was RTFM hehe

90% there now, just have to sort an Atrix for wifey & the printing solution & we are done woohoo

I went through similar not so long ago but just couldn't get to grips with Webtop. I think the idea of docking the Atrix and converting it into a 'laptop' it is brilliant, but the execution is just missing something. I've not checked up on the forums for a while but I believe you can get a full Ubuntu build running on it now through the Webtop/Dock. That might be interesting.

The Atrix is a great device. My wife and I have had ours almost 18 months and I can't see what I'd want to upgrade them to when the time comes. Especially as they are now running the ICS-based MIUI ROM which is superb.

There is a new webtop coming soon, I'm not one for upgrading & twiddling the inner workings of these things, but so far so good.

My fave part is being being able to make calls from the desktop with it all plugged in.
