Now that all the good stuff is in Google Play Services though, the magic has somewhat gone out of Android updates.
Why is that a bad thing? By shifting the updates to the play store and Play Services, they can be applied as soon as they are ready. Those with phones that come with bastardised versions of android also benefit, since they can get the improvements without having to wait for the manufacturer to make modifications to the new version, if they bother at all.

If you want something different then custom ROMs are the way to go. Still running CM11 nightlies on my N7 (there's a built in updater so you can easily keep up with the nightlies) - performance is very good even with the stock CM11 kernel (max 1.3GHz), I'm using zRam (at 26%, maximum setting) which I suspect is helping.

Oh I'm not saying it's a bad thing really. It's sure good for negating the whole (dubious) fragmentation thing, but new API levels used to bring a raft of new features that improved the experience, not something that happens now due to Play Services and a mature platform.

So I got myself a 16GB Nexus 7 (2012 version) about a month ago, yesterday it seem to have died....
When trying to unlock or restart all I get is the screen backlight coming up. Anyone had something similar? Do I need to send it back, or is there something I can do?

Just found a plum example of why latest Android version still matters to some degree; The Hudl I got my daughter for Christmas has a variant of 4.2 which means no user profiles.

4.3 will bring the ability to restrict the tablet by app etc.

Still running CM11 on mine - updating to the latest nightly regularly. But this seemed to have a detrimental effect on the performance to the point it was taking about 10 seconds to wake up, regular input/keyboard lag & randomly freezing for a second or ten. Even worse when any applications were updated (if they could be updated - was getting 'Error -24' with certain apps), much like the effects of thrashing on a PC/laptop - I though flash memory was supposed to be fast?

Done a factory wipe/reset (but kept the same ROM) and it seems to have recovered. For now...

Since the update to 4.4 ... has anybody else had issues with battery life (2012 model)

mine will no longer last anymore than 10-12 hours ... when you look at the battery side its all android OS thats using it up and keeping it awake for >7 hours in that 10-12 hour period!

Away to give it a factory reset to see if that changes things ... will only update the stock apps and see how it runs for a few days

No change in mine on battery life.

Well, thats not strictly true. Its had a massive improvement in battery life. it now last considerably longer. Due to my sons now having tablets of their own, and they use them now instead of my N7.

Battery life is fine for me, if anything it's better with 4.4.

However... what is a PITA is the charging takes ages no matter what charger/cable combo I use (unlike my N4, with can be flat to full in an around an hour with the N7's charger/cable). How quickly do your N7s charge up at?

I'm running a nightly of CM11 (based upon 4.4) which might have something to do with it. It's the only issue I have with it so far (I'm holding off updating to the latest nightles, this seem to have prevented the performance issues)

My battery life is rather poor recently but I had put it down to the battery being a year or so old

Sorry for probably covering old ground but there are far too many pages to go through on this thread! Which case do people recommend for the 2013 Nexus 7? I really like the look of the Asus premium case but I can't bring myself to spend £25, anything similar around for less?

My Son bought this one for his 2013 Nexus 7
"Poetic Slimline Case for Google Nexus 7 FHD 2nd Gen 2013 Android Tablet Light Blue (3 Year Manufacturer Warranty From Poetic)" http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00E7FY9N8

Only £12.95 at the moment and a very nice quality case it is too!

Well mine won't charge at all and now the battery has died.

It's not the charger as we've tried another charger so maybe a problem with the receptacle or some other internal problem.

The receptacle looks fine but I'm at a loss now as to gets is wrong.
