I was on the verge of selling mine as, living in Guernsey the apps that are accessible in the Play Store are basic and only free ones. I got sick of seeing the "this is not available in your country" message.
I've unlocked and rooted it which didn't make any difference although it's certainly speedier now and has gotten rid of a bit of lag that appeared after the 4.1.2 update.
I've just discovered though through pure luck that when I inserted my GiffGaff Sim into my phone I suddenly had access to all the UK store and I could buy apps/download more free ones and then instantly they have become available on my 7 in my apps list.
Result!!
I've now got the Nexus Media Importer that I couldn't get before, a host of games and have ordered a USB OTG to start making it more useful when travelling.

I read perfectly well from the Nexus. the light is quite subdued. You can also download a free Kindle app so in theory you should be able to share.
+1 Once you have installed kindle app you can log to Amazon kindle account and send what ever books you bought to nexus no problem!TotalControl said:
Does mhl work on these without rooting? I don't see a need to root mine as of yet.
Nexus media importer app cheap and don't need to root it allows you to play music etc and to copy to device but you can't write to USB device only copy from! I have managed to connect 1TB USB hard disk OK!http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008H5T0Y2/ref=...

Stupid question - would the HSPA version be able to be used as a phone? Even if only using a bluetooth headset.
Anyone know, or is it that stupid a question? From http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrymagid/2012/11/02/...
Don't know if it is contained from start of from 32GB versions onwards! All new to me!

I'm thinking about getting one for going into uni. I have a Dell xps17 laptop and its more like a mobile desktop than a true portable laptop. But i dont mind as it was a great spec for money and i needed something high perfomance. In lectures and tutorials i can see it being beneficial as my xps is HUGE. I don't have the budget for an iPad and they are pretty big, but having never played with a nexus 7, i cant judge.
I think it depends what you want to do with a device during lectures and tutorials. I now have a laptop (old and large), a netbook (pretty flakey) and the Nexus 7 - for tasks where I want to put a lot of text into an application I would always pick a device with a proper keyboard as for me it's hugely quicker to use a full size keyboard that I can touch type on. If I was using that device in a location where I needed to carry it around then I'd go for the netbook every time. Having said that I guess you could add a bluetooth keyboard to the Nexus and that might be OK but I'd want a close to full size keyboard for ease of data entry and on that basis, I'd probably still rather carry the netbook.
If all you want to do is put calendar and deadline entries into a calendar system then the Nexus would work well.
I'd be interested in other's views on using a bluetooth keyboard with a Nexus 7?
That said I also have the Logitech Bluetooth keyboard, and it's one of the best slim keyboards, tablet or otherwise, that I have used. I haven't seen any lag so far, though if you sit really far away from the tablet I suppose you could introduce some signal issues. Usually if your keyboard is lagging, it's either a software issue or the batteries are going dead.
