Any other phones out there with AMOLED that aren't Samsung?
Nexus 6P - http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_nexus_6p-7588.php

Motorola Moto X Force - http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_x_force-7555...
Hadn't realised the 6P was AMOLED. That was leading the pack anyway for me, that's just confirmed it a little more.

Need to see if EE will stock the 64/128Gb versions - I get 40% off if I buy through them.

My version 1 of N7 won't go to marshmallow, so I went and bought nvidia shield k1 for £150 and is so my better than a N7. Very happy.

My 2012 (I think) N7 is a paperweight after "upgrading" to 5.1.1 - do I have to root it to get back to 4.4.4 (or anything else that actually works)?

Google simply don't test their software properly, and don't have a rollback option. Thats basic change management and would be crap for even a small software supplier.
Didn't have an easy rollback mechanism, you mean. I flashed my 2012 back to KitKat, but I had to do it from a connected PC upon which you have to install software to do it. It was pretty straightforward though.

But I agree, it isn't a simple one-click option that is as easy as the upgrade (sic) is, and it isn't OTA.
Its not something that google provided though, so it was a leap of faith. The 2012 Nexus 7 was for sale up to 18 months before the OTA update trashed them. Thats pretty crap for a high end device.

Samsung do not push OTA updates for non compatible devices, so if you bought a cheaper samsung device at the time, it would still be working today.

A very fair point and I don't disagree with you.

What I was trying to convey with the post that you are quoting is that it is not impossible to revert. But, yes, the 2012 N7 clearly can't cope with anything later than KitKat and should never have received an OTA upgrade.

By contrast, the 2013 N7 will happily run Marshmallow.

Well you say that...but my Tab S 8.4 (Android 5.0.1) has been pretty terrible - was slow and laggy within a few months which is unacceptable. Bear in mind it's an octa-core device with 3Gb RAM as well, so should be no slouch. My Nexus 7 (2013) on Android 6 works beautifully...

In fact, the Tab S is sat under the coffee table, hasn't been powered on in months. I really should sell it.

Agreed. I've recently gone from a 32GB 2012 N7 to a 16GB 2013 N7 (99.99 from Argos!) and it absolutely flies.

Only minor downside is that there's no one touch cache cleaner out there that'll work due to the way Marshmallow is configured.

Same here. Not even sure where the damp thing is in the house after I couldn't be bothered with it.

Just bought a refurbished Ipad Air from Apple for 250 quid.

Much happier.
