A few hours without a mobile phone to hand for some people and the world seems to come to a halt ... funny!
Depends on the person though eh? A single person and their personal mobile it's not much of a problem. When it's a company with 4,500 PDA users who rely on the mobile data network for work scheduling, job data and real time tracking then it's massive ball ache and costs the company a lot of money!

Nick
.. or a single person who uses a mobile as their point of contact for their business.

Mine seems to work when it fancies now, very odd. If it is a database malfunction as stated earlier in the thread then surely I would just be on or off?

Signal seems to have come back but it's very erratic, going from one bar to full signal.

It's a bit more complicated than some users are on DB and some are on the other hence why you will get through sometimes and sometimes not.

I work in the mobile business and we support 30,000+ mobile data users so we have a high level in at o2 for our info.

Such a company should have a disaster recovery plan that copes with such issues.
Using PDA's with dual sim capability for example.

Data appears to be bksed for me, whether on 2g or 3G.

Connection comes up, 300k transfers in each direction, and then it hangs.

Most of the rugged PDAs don't support duel SIM in the UK which is a real pain as it means you have to physically swap out the SIm card. While this is possible it relies on the end users doing it and thsi generally results in a lot of broken devices needing repairs. Therefore most of these firms take the risk that occasionally there will be a an outage in certain areas on their chosen network. Nationwide outages are a very rare thing luckily!

Tempting fate here, but mine is back on with data (although not seen a 3G icon yet) - texts seem to have caught up from yesterday and emails coming through too.

I've found an old crappy PAYG and put some credit on it as a contingency though.

Or issuing PAYG sims on another provider, as we are doing this morning. I Manage about 100 O2 mobiles, and just sent out 50 PAYG T-Mobile sims to the team leaders for those who are lone working today. Just finished topping them all up with £10 credit!!!

I get our contract through a procurement group, and I have been told that they will foot the £500 bill for the PAYG top ups, and claim it back from O2. I suspect when groups like this gang up on O2, it's going to cost them a fortune!

So you propose running a parallel tariff for 4500 mobile devices just in case one network goes down? - effectively doubling the cost.

I don't propose anything because I don't know who the company is or have any knowledge of it's operations. What I do know is that a company 4500 mobile devices is large enough to have disaster recovery plans in place. It may well be that the plans says they will take the hit for a certain period of time while they get their recovery operation up and running.

If they don't have a disaster recovery plan then they are either incompetent or have extremely good business interruption insurance.
