Know where you're coming from but IMO it's well worth it. For my work 21->27 is pain->pleasure. Also you'll probably get most of that £400 back come resale time.

If there was a 24" imac it would be a nice middle ground..

Does anybody have any thoughts on what we might see in terms of screen size and resolution in the next revision of the imac?

Same sizes probably. Always a slim chance of seeing a 23/24 or a 30" I guess. If they go Retina (unlikely right now IMO, but a maybe) I expect the resolution (desktop space, not actual pixels) to drop a bit (say 27" @ 3840x2160, equiv. of 1920x1080) which would look lovely but defeat the point of a big screen to me. The Retina MBP screen looks lovely but just doesn't have the desktop space, my 2009 17" MBP is better (for me).
