They don't have to - plenty of other companies across the world are doing it for them. I drove past one in Edinburgh the other day - can't remember the name on the car, but it wasn't Google. Again by its nature such photography has to be updated regularly. What makes you think Google are the only ones to try and collect such data?
Number of devices is relative, 100 million seems loads, but when you think that Google Has android 500 million android devices activated, windows 7 has sold a similar number of licences not to mention computers running XP, Vista or even linux or OSX None of these computers, at the moment, will have apple maps.jamoor said:

100 Million and rapidly rising is plenty big enough to allow the user base to make a difference. The data isn't the problem for Apple. The integration of it with local listings, search, etc is where they really have their work cut out. But this is all good for the rest of us, whether or not we are Android or iOS users. Competition will drive the technology forward far faster than if the market was controlled by one player.

do you think they are suddenly going to deploy cars to drive around cities and take pictures to cater for their relatively small market, when their money comes from hardware??
Wow, you really have no comprehension of Apple's business model. "Their money comes from hardware" - it does not; it comes from closely integrated, hardware, software and services. That's why the company makes so much money. It's also why the Maps app is such a monumental fk-up; it's close to big enough to make people switch device. Murph7355 said:
As the dust is settling, anyone experienced any other issues with iOS6?

IT Services has recently become aware of recent issues with how the new Apple iOS 6 software communicates with the Microsoft Exchange email environment. The issues include:
- The user being prompted for their domain password multiple times
- The device hijacking one of your existing meeting invitations, resending it to you and then sending a cancellation message to all original invitees including the organizer
Until these issues are resolved, we are advising users to delay any upgrades to iOS 6 on your existing corporate or personal iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
Someone has commented on it saying that his iPhone hijacked his bosses team meeting invite, and sent a cancellation to everyone (including his boss) even though he wasn't the original meeting organiser.- The user being prompted for their domain password multiple times

Brilliant!
