Cheap android tablets
Discussion
Just a heads-up for anyone else who might be interested. I thought this might be a good idea for the kids' christmas presents but didn't want to fork out for anything 'nice' like the Nexus 7 and have little fingers drop/break/bend them or cover them in foody fingerprints.
I ended up buying these for £60 on Amazon and they arrived the other day:

I was skeptical, but I'm really, REALLY impressed. Build quality seems excellent, they're pre-rooted and running lovely, unadulterated ICS. Screens are crystal clear and very responsive, and the processor seems to be more than up to the job. I'm so impressed I'm seriously thinking about buying another one for myself.
Well worth it, if anyone's thinking about venturing into the Andoid tablet world.

Looks like a real bargain. Not long ago you would have had trouble getting a tablet with a resistive screen for this price.
Very tempted as an X-mas pressie for my 8 year old lad who loves Android games + watching his cartoons on youtube.
Might go for the one with the HDMI out though for an extra £10, might come in handy at some point.

I've got an 8 and 7 year old boys who may also be quite happy with this. May purchase them and give it a shot.Very tempted as an X-mas pressie for my 8 year old lad who loves Android games + watching his cartoons on youtube.

They're cheap for a reason. I had a similar model for about a week before I decided to sell it. Touch screen was crap, resolution is too low for a tablet so it looks crap. Various apps crash. Slow....etc etc. Most are based around similar SoCs so they're all much the same.
Saying that they do have advantages like the SD card slot, HDMI etc etc.
The Nexus 7 was announced days later and now I couldn't be happier, it's sooooooooooooooo much better and well worth the extra cash.

This is my only concern around these tablets, although all of the feedback around this one does seem very good. And it is 1/3 of a nexus, which appeals when it is for a child. Will keep an eye on opinions, be interested to see what their returns policy is like if not happy with it straight away.Saying that they do have advantages like the SD card slot, HDMI etc etc.

Is another one worth considering, I had it back in June as a pressy. Not a tegra chip like the nexus, but quick enough for angry birds or web browsing

I'm a little bit disappointed by the screen quality but I love the light weight feel and the 4:3 ratio just feels so much more natural than all the 7" tablets out there. Cheap enough to leave on the coffee table without the fear of losing several hundred pounds if it breaks.
It really does feel like a mini-ipad without the weight. Bit gutted that there's now a momo8 IPS, but then that does cost 115 pounds.

Indeed, for that use I think it's fine for the price But for me it wasn't up to scratch even though it was dirt cheap.
