I'm interested in the built in light on this new kindle and how it works. I have an original 3g kindle and the cover with built in light. One of the things which makes the kindle so nice to read is that, unlike a table, it isn't backlit so does not strain eyes at all. With the built in light will it be more like a tablet and not as easy to read for extended periods? Not that I have any intention of changing as long as my current kindle keeps working, however.

The Paperwhite is front-lit. There is a lot of marketing guff about "flattened fibre optics" but the synopsis is that the display is covered by a thin plastic panel, which is lit from the side. Normally, total internal reflection keeps the light within the plastic sheet, but because it is in contact with another surface the light passes through the interface and bounces off the lower layer. I imagine they do some trickery by etching (or, as their marketing people call it - nanoimprinted) the underneath of the plastic or something to even out the light distribution.
