LG Google Nexus 4

I've just bought a Nexus 7 32gb tablet today and I'm very tempted by the Nexus 4.
Might try and make do with the old Desire for a couple of months and see if contract prices come down...unless anyone knows of a cheap SIM only deal with decent (500mb+) data connection to run alongside the Nexus 4?

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-pho... - LG's current flagship model.
Only real criticism of it is that it has just been released too late compared to the competition from HTC and Samsung.
The only real complaint I've heard of LG devices is that their software is sub par, considering this is running pure Google Android this won't translate to mean too much (hopefully, I think LG will still code the drivers).
I could be wrong, but as far as I can gather, the Nexus 4 is based on the LG Optimus G, rather than the Optimus 4X HD.Only real criticism of it is that it has just been released too late compared to the competition from HTC and Samsung.

Now £12 for unlimited, still very good value.

This is the best place to look for sim only deals. I'm currently paying under £2 a month for 300 mins, 500 texts and 500mb, on a 12 month contract when you take into consideration the cashback. (£100 cashback via quidco on the £120 full contract price, and yes I have been paid the cashback already )
I'm seriously considering getting a Nexus 4 to replace my iPhone 4S, or at least getting one to play with and see if that is really an option for me. At that price I suspect there will be a lot of iPhone users trying it out just to see.

Don't get me wrong, if the physical quality of the device is good then I'll be in
I'm just worried that the price combined with LG's reputation of a middle tier manufacturer......
You weren't the only one, I wasn't bothered about this when I thought it was going to be £400 - £500 however at this price, and with those specs, it definitely raises the interest issue a few notches.I'm just worried that the price combined with LG's reputation of a middle tier manufacturer......
Having owned lots of Androids, including my current Galaxy Nexus and old Nexus One, I'd say the Nexus phones represent the best way to experience android. I'm sure its down to the timely updates and lack of bloat which means my "old" Galaxy Nexus outperforms my GFs SGS3 in the real world (speed, smoothness, stability). And yes, hers has got JB on it!
LGs recent reputation was for poor software. That should be a moot point now its a Nexus.

I'm out of contract mid way through November.....
While I'm sure Google would love you using cloud services more, the reasons for dropping MicroSD slots are a bit more technical based than that.

"While Google still supports removable storage with the Android OS they are not using it for a few reasons. One major reason is that the file system on the devices use EXT instead of a combo of FAT and EXT. The reason for this is that with a combination of FAT and EXT you sacrifice speed and safety causing more errors and permission problems.
The second benefit of using a pure EXT file system is that when connecting your machine to your computer you can’t mess up the file system since you will not have block level access. Instead you will now have a FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace) system is used to mount a virtual SD Card that you can write to. This way you don’t get the common errors of unmounting incorrectly. With this you still have access to the entire file system."

The only reasons I can see for Google and LG to be running such slim margins on this phone are:
Google wants to make a splash in the realm of the average consumer market, rather than (like previous Nexuses) aiming this just at the nerd/power-users.
They've recently released their tablets and want to push people into the Google ecosystem and feel once they're in they'll be easily retained (a la Apple).
We're not quite at saturation, but there are lot of people buying their second (or third, or fourth) smartphone. People will generally stick to the platform they know - and crucially, have bought apps for - unless there's a really compelling reason to change. It's no good being about as good as the iPhone for about the same price as the iPhone, that's not enough to convince anyone to switch.Google wants to make a splash in the realm of the average consumer market, rather than (like previous Nexuses) aiming this just at the nerd/power-users.

£279 vs £529 though (almost half the price for same capacity) - that goes a long way to convincing people to try it out, even if they will have to re-buy some apps.
Curently have a HTC sensation and I do like android but since is last update to ICS its running pretty poor with lag and other issues, my nexus 7 running jellybean is fantastic though and I'd love a smartphone to be as smooth and responsive as my tablet,so this nexus phone is beginning to look very appealing to me as I'm coming towards the end of my contract with the sensation, did pretty much make my mind up to go for a sg3 but now not so sure ......
Well all I can say as I have a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 7. I'd say if anything the Galaxy Nexus ran smoother than the Nexus 7. My girlfriend has an S3 and I'm not impressed TBH, good hardware, rubbish software, it runs slower than my Nexus which has approx half the CPU/GPU potential.
These software overlays that HTC, Samsung, Sony, LG etc all use slows these machines down considerably. They also tend to look worse (OK HTCs implementations are fairly pretty I'll give you that but they are more bloated than most).
With a Nexus device you just don't get this. Faster, smoother and more stable.

I'll just add that Touchwiz (Samsungs crappy UI) is the work of the devil.
Indeed, it was pretty much this that made me get rid of my SGS2 in favour of the Gnex. I tried running these much lauded AOSP / AOKP / Vanilla ROMs on it, but frankly, they never ever work properly or to their potential, battery life and stability suffers, and you can always tell it wasn't designed that way. You also don't get the onscreen buttons (well you can but again it eats into your screen estate and renders your soft buttons pointless).I think as much of an assault on rivals as Apple as this is, these devices are aimed at making people (and maybe even the manufacturers themselves) just how much better Android is without the bloatware.
