I reckon the colour options make it stand out as a phone and give people choice. The colours have a matte finish so do not look tacky.

I took a look at the HTC 8X the other day and was very impressed with the quality of the handset and the slickness of the OS.
One of these is further up my list than the 920, they are a good size, have a great screen and are very well put together.

Excellent review, thank you. I have used a Lumia 800 for the past year or so and am due an upgrade. The 920 is my top choice but I need to have a good look at a real device to make sure it isn't too big for my girly hands.

On the subject of battery life, does it get you through a day comfortably or does it need an extra charge if you have a late night planned?

I still maintain WP7/8 is the best mobile OS that nobody is using.

It easily goes for more than 24hrs. That's with me just having the wifi on at home and maybe over lunchtime at work. I also keep NFC, GPS and Bluetooth off unless I need them.

I had a play with an 820 today and was really impressed with it. Am looking at a replacement for an iPhone4 and have really become disgruntled with Apple - on the other hand I am liking Win8 and Office 2013 on the desktop and these Nokia's seem like the ideal companion what with native Office apps and IE. The GUI was really slick as has been mentioned, and the lower res display on the 820 didn't seem like a hindrance particularly. I'm not too bothered about battery life as my iPhone 4 is nearly constantly charging - whether at home, in the car or office - and I'd aim to do the same with the Nokia by placing a few charging pads in the obvious places.

Carphone warehouse are currently doing the 820 sim free, unlocked for £380 inc VAT with free wireless charge pad and a MS promotional copy of Win8 (upgrade). Think I'm going to take a punt on one... the 920 is just too big for my liking, from what I've read...

I don't need to say a lot about the camera. The height from which it takes a huge, yellow slash on other phone cameras is incalculably huge. That is all.
You should try the 808, which takes a huge yellow slash over the 920. Honestly, while the 920 is good, the 808 is on a level above.
A yellow whatnow? confused

Came sooo close to buying but got the Note 2 instead simply due to its size. SWMBO has an 800 and I think its great so am not surprised by the OP's review.

Camera-wise perhaps, but the 920 has a better everything else. And looks better.
Not sure about that - what does the 920 do *better*, rather than just different? Live tiles? Symbian has widgets that perform exactly the same function (as do the widgets on Android).

I've now had a month with an iPhone 4S along side the 808, and for my usage the 808 is by far away the better device. Similar with my experiences on Android, they don't do anything better than Symbian.

Yeah! Really looking forward to BBX as, from what I've so far, it looks exceptionally well thought out and, as I said in my OP, I still don't think you can beat a Bold 9900 for actually communicating with people smile

Does the Nokia sync with Google for your contacts, calendar etc?

Cheers, had a quick look at it appears easy to sync to your Google account.

I like the uniform look they're going with Windows, even through their hardware, especially with the loud colours that are very well implemented. I think we do need more colour in our lives, how odd that may sound. It's all to easy to design something that looks good in black or white or silver, but Nokia/Microsoft has (imho) pulled off colours really well. Also the HTC efforts look great.

Plus, you get a whole range of colours as well as devices to chose from.

As for the one who, in his mind, finds that the availability of anything other than black (and probably white wink) degrades the device. wobblesillynuts

Yeah but Microsoft are going the opposite way with their development tools, and are removing colour from interfaces to make it look pretty. This is bloody annoying when colour is one of the single most important aspects of interface design.

Thanks for this! Really fancy one. Have had iPhones for 5 years or so now and I'm just a bit bored of them, time for a change.

Will be picking one up in the next week or so, and you've just reassured me. smile

Been waiting to buy one of these since they were announced so a little peeved that they are currently exclusive to EE. I have a contract with a cash pot available for phones so will have to wait for them to become available at the start of next year. Guards Red or Riviera Blue for me I think.

Sorry, I still don't get it. You wouldn't buy something because, despite the fact you could get it in the colour you wanted, the fact it was offered in other colours would put you off?

Is that what you're saying?
rofl I must say, that did amuse me. A lot.

Anyway good review OP. I was considering one of these, but I didn't quite feel ready to make the jump from Android just yet, but I was attracted by the quality of its camera. I really like the look of these (even some of the tacky colours that would put someone off buying a black one).

One thing that I am curious about, and wonder if you would test for me (no problem if you CBA though).... is whether it supports gapless MP3 playback; In other words, you know how you get dance albums that have tracks that seemlessly join together? Well if you have a said album in MP3 format, is the inbuilt software able to play it seemlessly or does it have a gap?

Sounds like a daft question, but even now 2012, Android devices out of the box STILL cannot do this (the iPhone can and has always been able to). It remains my number one bone of contention with Android (even though you can get replacement players from the Play Store that will do it, thank goodness).

A comment on the sound quality might be good too (depends whether you're an 'audiophile' though).

Is this iPhone 4-specific? I have a mate and a colleague that I often have "bad reception" with, come to think of it they both have an iPhone 4/iPhone 4S?
