Really? Everything I've seen gave the early demos of the Oculus rave reviews... and I'll be having one when they're released.
I believe he's referring to VR headsets in general, which until Occulus came along, were all heavy, cumbersome, and very expensive. I'm a backer of Star Citizen and can't wait to get an Occulus Rift with it.According the the website:
Q: When will the consumer version of the Oculus Rift ship?
A: We haven’t announced an exact date or quarter for the consumer product’s release, but we promise we’re working tirelessly to make it available as soon as possible.
What will it be like if you wear specs? How much?

Necro!
Ok, so I played with this last night. All I can say is Wow. This is the future of games. It is incredible.
- The demo based in a house in Italy - this was my first impression. Looking around, looking up, going to the edge of the cliff and looking down, picking up a ball, and throwing it by moving the controller and releasing the button etc. A nice introduction, and pretty strange feeling.
- Played a bit of TF2 - completely disorientating initially, but you get into it. Very strange to look around and not have the aim locked to the centre of the screen, takes a while to get used to it. At the start, when all the players were hanging around - actually seeing them stand a little further back from each other and able to 'see' that. The depth perception was fantastic. Great.
- The rollercoaster demo was pretty good, but not as impressive after playing TF2.
- There was a helicopter demo - if you velcro'd one of the hand controllers to your chest to act as a 'body' sensor, bit heath robinson, but it works. You sit in the cockpit, use xbox controller to pilot it. The body sensor is important - you lean out of the cockpit to look down past the skids. Look behind you to see your passenger. Yawing/cycling around and leaning out so you can look down. It is an incredible feeling. Leaning out to look past the skids so you can land safely - adds so much to the feel of actually 'piloting' it. Fab.
- HL2. This was mind blowing. Really awesome, despite being really rough around the edges. The biggest effect was those little camera drone things. When they took a photo, you were *totally* blinded for a few seconds. Imagine what a FB would be like! Would actually work. The sense of height and depth is incredible.
All in all a great experience. After taking it off, you can get a little disorientated for a few seconds, but I'm told that passes. Can also wear it with glasses.
Sad news: one of the partners who started the firm was killed in a hit and run accident yesterday in a police chase. The crim wiped him out on an intersection. RIP.

Firstly, terrible news about the accident sad indeed.
However, the 'consumer' version of the OR is meant to be even better, I hear, especially offering better resolution. The downside, is that it seems it'll be another 12 months before that comes up for sale....
Looking forward to it though, really want to try one out. Games like ARMA3 and other simulations should be brilliant.

Originally backed on Kickstarter,

They asked for $250k and got $2.4 million.... yer there's no demand.
One of the playstation bosses seemed keen in getting these compatible.

Can't believe you posted that pic of me! You said it was only going to be in your private collection, you've let me down badly.
On another note, I saw this the other day and thought about this thread but forgot to post it:

I've got one of the Oculus dev kits. It arrived 2 weeks ago and I've had enough use to tell me that the consumer product really will be the product that they're promising. The dev kit itself is great to demo the tech but not something that I'd use regularly so mine's gone onto eBay. The stand out game for it at the moment is Half Life 2, which is just mind bending in VR. What I really wanted it for was racing games as I just don't have the space for a 3 monitor rig, so this little headset is a great alternative. However, the low res display on the dev kit makes it basically useless for racing games. You can't make out your braking markers and end up lapping a lot slower.
For other genres it's really bloody good. For HL2 the dev kit really shines.
FFwd to next year and the Oculus with higher resolution display (already demonstrated at E3 this year) as positional tracking will be a potential game changer. Far more so than the PS4 and X-Box One which are just bringing more power to the same formula.

Nope, I just didn't get any free evenings last week and was away from home all weekend. Petty much the other reason I'm selling it, simply not got the time to get the best out of it.
It is one of the demos most users are recommending though, but I'm happy to wait for the consumer release now. I've seem enough to believe the hype.
