I switched Tasker off a few weeks ago because my constant messing about was murdering my battery life. I've started switching things on one by one again now though.

I've been experimenting a lot with gestures but I can't quite work out whether it has a major impact on the battery or not. It's incredible what you can do with them though.

I set one profile up so that by raising the phone into a typical 'taking a photo' position, it would automatically load the camera app. It worked pretty well but maybe 1/10 times it wouldn't pick the gesture up and then you look like a tit waggling the phone about. I changed it to a simple shake to launch the camera app instead. It's surprisingly useful, especially when you only have one hand free.

I've also got a profile that texts the missus as I leave work so she knows when to put the oven on biggrin
Last one is indeed a good one, but mine just checks on latitude smile. As per the battery, have several profiles, mainly bluetooth related (very easy on the bike), haven't noticed a negative impact on the battery.

The annoying thing, now, is that it constantly warns me about low memory. I've got about 130mb free, but it's annoying as I can't work out what's hogging memory.

You can turn that warning off in:
Preferences
->
Misc
->
Low Memory Notification

What phone do you have? My SGS2 runs very smooth and it hardly has anything more than 200MB free.

Using Llama -

Turn on wifi when I get home, and turn it off when I leave home.

Turn on wifi when I open maps (to aid location finding) and turn it off when maps close.

Put the phone into a quieter mode (lower volume ringer, etc) when I get to work, and put it back to loud when I leave, and put into a normal setting when I get home.

Turn off data when I get to work, unless the screen is on, and then turn it back on when I leave work (stops me being tempted to check every email "ping").

Automatically put it into silent mode when I have a meeting in my calendar.

Put it into silent mode overnight, but not until after midnight if I am not at home.

Launch music player, set the media volume and start playing when I plug headphones in. Stop the media player when I take the headphones out.

Another tasker question:

Can I use it to prevent my phone from locking when in a call - There's a company policy that, when the phone locks, it will require a code to unlock it. Normally that's fine, but when in a call and I've muted the phone due to background noise, it's bloody annoying...

I saw one the other day that I thought might be useful if you spend a lot of time in the car. Use GPS to detect whether you're driving (e.g. travelling above 10mph) and if so, respond to any incoming calls with a text to say so. You could also add your location and current speed to the text if you wanted.

The last one might get you into trouble though: "Sorry I can't take your call. I'm currently driving at 93mph through the centre of Leicester"biggrin

Most of my driving is mainly driving to an office so it's a bit pointless for me but I like the idea.

I've recently put Llama back on my tablet, mainly to turn wifi on and off when I'm at home...

With Llama you have to set one set of commands to turn it on, and another set of commands to turn it off... which is a bit of a pita when you need it to come on and off at different times on different days...

Does Tasker let you set it to turn on and off in one go?

It has a "tasks" and an "exit tasks".

So you said: if connect to this wifi do "tasks", then the "exit tasks" will be executed if disconnected. You work with "profiles", basically a "state" of your phone. So you could say these X number of GSM antennas means I'm "home", so that becomes the "state" of your phone. If the "state" changes (no more at home for example), the "exit tasks" are executed.

Yep, cool, ta!

It's possibly a little more user friendly in that respect then, so no JTW, your money hasn't been entirely wasted... hehe

A good idea for a thread, been using tasker for about 2 years now.
TBH my usage is fairly basic ( wi-fi off, data off for battery saving, silent mode based on time state).
I'd be interested in working out how to switch on/off wi-fi based on my nearest cell-tower ( home + work location)

My nearest cell tower isn't far when I'm at home so that's reliable enough to use, but the one at work is hopeless and would constantly be flicking off and on which played havoc with a Tasker profile I'd set up with it. If you have a strong enough signal then it's probably the most battery efficient way of detecting your location but whether it's reliable or not seems to depend on your signal strength.

I have done it in Llama by creating an area called "Home" by learning cell locations and a variable called WiFi, then creating the following three actions -

At Home when 'WiFi' has a value of 'Disconnected' - enable WiFi for 1 minute then turn off if not connected every 5 minutes

When your phone disconnects from <Any Wifi network> - disable WiFi and set Llama variable 'WiFi' to 'Disconnected'

When your phone connects to *use your SSID here* enable WiFi and set Llama variable 'WiFi' to 'Connected'

I'm still experimenting with Tasker. I've set wifi to come on when I get home and go off when I leave dependent on my nearest cell tower. It's not as accurate as using GPS but doesn't drain the battery as much and is good enough for my purposes.

One task I worked our for myself and am rather proud of is when I plug my earphones into the phone Doggcatcher launches (I listen to loads of podcasts on my way to work) and the volume is turned up. I've got others for putting the phone on silent at night (which I know Llama could do) and to keep the display active for a period of time when the phone is charging.

When I get more time I'm hoping to try some more complex tasks - not always essential but good fun if you can get them working correctly.

I worried that Tasker was killing my battery but it seems it was the Google Now widget I'd installed at the same time that was the culprit.

I've tried tasker and couldn't figure it out, so went to llama and have been using it for a while now. Tried setting up the no pun lock when at home, but it's hit and miss, sometimes it works and then it will suddenly always ask me for my pin. No idea if it's a llama issue, or a CM10.1 issue
