If you have kids, there's a free 3 months of Disney Life in the offers at the moment, loads of Disney / Pixar animated films and Kids TV series on there.

If you don't have kids, there's a free 3 months of Disney Life in the offers at the moment, most of the Pixar films and shorts are on it, and a load of older Disney movies, animated and filmed. (Cool Runnings, Tron, Holes...)

Chromecast is just great, all 3 tv's in house that work exactly the same.
Youtube for stuff
Netflix for movies/series
Plex for anything that's not on Netflix
Play Music for music

I'm debating getting one of these but I'd like a current owner to confirm it can do what I want it to do, as the website isn't totally clear for me (or I'm just not understanding it) I have a HTC phone that is two years old and now defunct as I have a new one, so I can use the HTC as a "media centre".

I want to be able to: Browse the web, Watch Netflix, Watch YouTube and Watch movies through the VLC media player app on the phone.

Will a Chromecast allow me to do this? It's the watching of movies via VLC that I'm least knowledgeable about, the others I'm certain can be done. I'd be copying a movie onto my phone, playing it on the phone, which then casts it to the Chromecast / TV. Is this correct?

Not with VLC.
It will do all of that but you need the Allcast app.
£3.00 from the app store.
Youtube jyst works from the youtube app.

Thanks for the update.

So if VLC won't cast, is there an app where I can cast saved movies from the phone onto the TV? I have movies and TV shows saved on my PC, and the intention was to copy them onto the phone to cast, is this possible with any app?

Yes.
Allcast, as previously mentioned.

Or use Plex, it will play local media as well as hooking up to your server and any other device with Plex on it. Web Video Caster is very good for scraping videos off websites too.

I'm pulling my hair out with these things. I can get our iPad to connect to the chrome cast via the netflix app but nothing else. the Google Chromecast app just won't see the device at all.

So it's basically fine for Netflix but no other apps, what a waste of time (and money).

What other apps have you tried?

On the chromecast for iPad, is there nothing listed under devices - I assume you have followed the setup and connected to the device directly initially, etc.

Nothing, you go to add devices in the app which then tells you to go to your wifi and choose chromecast which just isn't there. doesn't work in iplayer, itv hub, youtube etc etc

Yet Netflix app can connect at any time.

confused

To add a device, you follow the prompts until the chromecast becomes its own wifi device. You then drop from your current wifi connection and switch directly to the chromecast to finish the setup.

Do you see the chromecast wifi available when you reach that step?

It sounds like it isn't setup properly if apps (Netflix aside) can't see it.

If you're unfortunate enough to own an Apple product, you probably should be using apple TV instead.

The setup is easy as pie on Android, but I'm not familiar enough with apple stuff to know how you do it, but I do know that apple > Apple stuff is normally seamless.

I've got it working fine on all the family's Android devices and also the various Apple things lying around.

Don't really notice the difference, tbh.

Bump.

Just purchased one of these after briefly moving back home and saw the little brother using one.

I am really impressed with it, mainly use for my NFL Game Pass at the moment while they develop the apps for PS4 and the Fire Stick, It works really well with Netflix and NowTV too.

The only issue with the NowTV cast, (but i think it is more to do with NowTV) is the Chromecast is classed as another device and as such when you play via phone and then cast you are essentially using your 2 devices.

If you are casting from the app, it doesn't count the app as a device only the Chromecast. So, if you only use the app for Chromecast you can remove it from your device list and replace it with the Chromecast. If you still want to be able to watch in the app, you will need both registered.
