Yes, via Plex as the chromecast has a plex app built in.

Picked one up at lunch from PC World. Will be giving it a whirl later on....not sure how useful it will be currently as I dont have netflix or much content from Google play. Though I do have plex running on 2 machines at home!

For £30?

I may do the same tomorrow if so.

What does it do? From what I've read, you "send" what you're reading or doing to the device - What happens if you turn your device off?

Yep for £30.

"The Chromecast is actually running a pared-down version of the Chrome browser, and the applications on the device are Web applications that receive the aforementioned HTTP requests and react accordingly. Once the app is launched, it will actually be running on the Chromecast, but a communication channel will be open that allows the client device to act as a sort of remote control. This dynamic allows you to turn off your mobile device without stopping whatever is streaming from the Chromecast to your TV." - http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/chromecast1.h...

google recently opened the SDK to all, so I think we can expect some much better plugins for streaming etc very soon.

I ordered one with the £5 off deal from amazon today in anticipation..

I'm intending to use it for plex, and hopefully to stream my mythtv recordings.. spotify would be nice too..

You can use a tablet to queue up youtube video's on it - turned my old non-wifi tv into a great way to watch pointless crap & Drive videos on a big screen!

The Chromecast is a great bit of kit but doesnt do anything really that your average smart TV cant do. It is however much quicker to use and very intuitive and as time goes on more and more apps will become cast enabled.

What I hope Google will do, sooner rather than later, is allow at least Nexus devices to cast their whole screen which currently requires a miracast box.

Not having a Chromecast, that was going to be my question.

So I take it if I want to cast the entire screen from my laptop or tablet to the tv I should go for a Miracast device ?

Yes Miracast is what you need for that - plus I think it is only Nexus Devices that have this functionality. You can check by going to settings --> Display --> Check if there is a Cast Screen option (on non skinned Android). On the plus side a Miracast device will also be picked up by Windows 8(.1?) and can be used as a wireless 2nd screen!

Miracast it is so. smile

Yeah, it's only Nexus devices on 4.4.x have that feature in the display settings.

My N7 has it, but my three year old Nexus S on 4.1.2 doesn't, but that's giving way for an N5 next week.

Oh, that would be quite impossible!

Well, it displays the albumart when it's on but I can understand people would see it as a waste smile. We use it in this configuration on a daily basis though.
Technically you could get it to work but you'd have to plug it into the soundbar not TV.

Otherwise, like I said, with amps or other speakers that have a HDMI port it'd be very easy. There's no menu's to navigate, just stuff to throw at it from various sources. Bigges ones missing now are, for example, spotify. But I think they're on it as we speak. The Cast API has only been released last month IIRC.

Had one delivered this morning and it was all installed and configured from multiple devices about 10 minutes later. I like easy installs smile

Unfortunately I've now got carried away and am updating the Synology NAS to stream to it. I think I'm struggling now laugh

The ChromeCast streams directly, so you can close the browser window or whatever and it keeps going.
