I was in a similar position a few months ago and was ready to hand over the cash to microsoft until someone told me to give it a go, haven't given MS Office a second look since as it's done everything I've wanted.

For what it's worth, LibreOffice came out top in a PC magazine survey a few months ago.

I know I is subscription based, but 80 quid a year for 5 PCs and it includes publisher
